Agree and pretty much how I feel. Just pissed off with a litany of failure.
As you say, this appointment will tell us where the owners heads are at. They should have acted sooner IMO but lets see where they go from here.

Agree Dave but the owners may have targets who simply don't want to come.No sign of European  competition could be what does for us.

I do fear the worst - our squad is badly balanced

We need someone who sees us as a project. Someone who is a coach at heart as much as a manager. If a target doesn’t want to come because of no European football then he’s not the right choice.

Very good. It does really bug me that Newcastle got it so right.

I sometimes wonder whether Villa fans would rather have a close and chummy relationship with those who run the club than a management team that is utterly ruthless and single-minded about bringing success.  Maybe because we've been starved of success for so long a cosy, unambitious, fan-focused club seems more desirable or attainable.

I kept hoping something would click and his tenure would be pleasant surprise. I was OTT about not wanting him appointed when it was first mooted, there's not even any crumb of satisfaction in it being even more of a disaster than I thought it would be.

All I really am is depressed that we've gone backwards yet again

There is quite a small but vocal parochial small c conservative undercurrent in the Villa fan base that raises its head at times like this very often preceded by the quote of “well he’s not a Villa man” or “he doesn’t get the club”. Football is a multi national sport now we need to get rid of this parochial mentality.

To use the word when McLeish was hired I would apply to the Mings treatment. Inexplicable.

Why chose a fight with a fans favourite and seemingly good egg outside of football? Clearly he wanted him gone and totally backfire when Carlos got injured.

I think it’s what we all feel.
Total confusion as to what the “plan” is now. Is it the initial, well thought out plan of progressing the youth set up or have we done an about turn and gone back to wasting money on sub standard players with no real foresight. I’ve no idea where we are at now, perhaps that can be explained to us by Purslow.

I don't agree that that's changed at all. The only youth team player who Smith really played was Ramsey, and if anything Gerrard has made him more of a permanent fixture. Gerrard also had Chukwuemeka in the squad and playing, but once it was clear he wanted to go it wasn't worth persevering with him. The main change was forced upon us by Grealish leaving, and Lange signing three players who don't fit into any recognisable system at all. Smith failed to integrate them all, as did Gerrard in the end.
