Please understand before one of us dies

I know that Risso gets grumpy with too much embedded stuff, but otherwise I'd put that Simpsons meme of the class all cheering when Bart says that thing that they all want him to say.

Aston Villa ARE pleased, not is! For fucks sake.

Can we sink any lower??

‘Is’ for me. Aston Villa is a single entity. See Fawlty Towers:

Major: Hampshire won again Fawlty.

Basil: Did it? Jolly good.

Basil is clearly disinterested/not paying attention in that scene. Aston Villa is a group of people.

As somebody who is on the wrong side of this argument, shouldn’t you have written ‘Aston Villa ARE a group of people’?

Or have you just defeated your own argument?

But anyway, Aston Villa is a football club. A single football club. And it is delighted to announce the signing of a new player.

That was "Aston Villa" as a semantic clause for the sake of an argunent, not as a football club.

Indeed. I mean, that's literally the joke.

My wife and I always see that as an acknowledgement of Basil’s sublime command of the language, the joke being that people who don’t get it will foolishly laugh, unaware of their own mistake.

Granted, but I always try to think what would best apply to first and third person. The singular works in the third person ('Aston Villa is-') but not in the first person ('I am-'). Whereas 'Aston Villa are-' and 'we are-' works.

Not that I'm especially concerned. Language is flexible and ever-changing.

I've always thought of "Aston Villa" as a plural noun when discussing the players, or the team on the pitch ("Villa are winning/losing etc"), and singular when referring to the business entity or the club as a whole ("Aston Villa is planning to appoint a new manager").

It's entirely possible I'm wrong on both counts, obviously.

I think that's fair. I use plural for both but don't have a problem with anyone doing differently. Certainly not when most people (not on H&V, I hasten to add, where the standard of literacy is incredibly high) don't know the difference between loose/lose and there/their/they're.

But y'know, life's too short. I was told by an English teacher in year 7 that 'there is no such thing as the possessive apostrophe', and so up to the age of 19 I stuck to that, and was wrong. So I'm in no position to judge!
