Aston Villa is a group of people.

The singular works in the third person ('Aston Villa is-') but not in the first person ('I am-'). Whereas 'Aston Villa are-' and 'we are-' works. Not that I'm especially concerned. Language is flexible and ever-changing.

Language is flexible and ever-changing.I've always thought of "Aston Villa" as a plural noun when discussing the players, or the team on the pitch ("Villa are winning/losing etc"), and singular when referring to the business entity or the club as a whole ("Aston Villa is planning to appoint a new manager"). It's entirely possible I'm wrong on both counts, obviously.
