Granted, but I always try to think what would best apply to first and third person. The singular works in the third person ('Aston Villa is-') but not in the first person ('I am-'). Whereas 'Aston Villa are-' and 'we are-' works.

Not that I'm especially concerned. Language is flexible and ever-changing.

I've always thought of "Aston Villa" as a plural noun when discussing the players, or the team on the pitch ("Villa are winning/losing etc"), and singular when referring to the business entity or the club as a whole ("Aston Villa is planning to appoint a new manager"). 

It's entirely possible I'm wrong on both counts, obviously.

I think that's fair. I use plural for both but don't have a problem with anyone doing differently. Certainly not when most people (not on H&V, I hasten to add, where the standard of literacy is incredibly high) don't know the difference between loose/lose and there/their/they're.

But y'know, life's too short. I was told by an English teacher in year 7 that 'there is no such thing as the possessive apostrophe', and so up to the age of 19 I stuck to that, and was wrong. So I'm in no position to judge!
