Intertoto cup final 2001 - footage?
« on: July 19, 2022, 03:00:22 PM »
I've searched in vain for online footage of the last time we won a European trophy - I'd like to see the goals at least.

Does anybody know of any links? I've searched this site too and can't find anything.

Cheers

All I can remember about winning that is Ginola having possibly his best game for us, and Merson running round the pitch with his arms aloft, triumphantly holding the smallest trophy I'll ever see.

I seem to recall Merson and Schmeichel chucking it to each other in fits of giggles.

Was a good result though, in front of a near full house, back in the days where that didn't happen every match. That first round exit against Varteks must be our worst European result, and it's got some stiff competition.

Brilliant goal from Ginola, as well.

Didn't we beat Basel 4-1? Or 4-2 perhaps.

It was a full house but a poor atmosphere. It reinforced my belief that Villa fans are really price sensitive when paying for tickets ( they were relatively cheap that night)

Morning Nik! 4-1 I think. - vague feeling they took the lead.

They did. It was an Aussie midfielder Scott Chipperfield who scored seconds after I wondered aloud whether he'd joined Basel fron a circus.

It will be on 01/02 season review.

Basle had a good team in those days, pretty sure they beat Liverpool in CL a season later and were CL regulars in that period. Yakin brothers played that night I think.

Sums us up we did the hard slog of beating them and Rennes and then losing to those Croatian part timers in the actual first round proper.
