55 in 70 for Newcastle. Shit me! How much would he be worth now?

I think i read a story that we tried to get him from Bristol before Newcastle did, but something went tits up, possibly being Dougs fault or maybe even Big Ron's fault but can't remember exactly.
Some of those 55 would have been at what is now Championship level but impressive nevertheless.

I did wonder that, yes 12 in 12 in the championship, but in addition an overall record afterwards of 56 in 72 in all competitions.

Didn't we claim we tried to sign him from Newcastle, same as we claimed we wanted Van Nistelrooy before Man U did? Almost like Doug was full of absolute shit.

And Frank Lampard...

I think we were 'in the running' for Lineker and he went to Spurs, Shearer and he went to Blackburn, Cole and he went to Newcastle, Gazza and he went to Rangers, Ferdinand and he went to Newcastle, possibly Bergkamp as well before Arsenal?,  Frank Lampard and he went to Chelsea, Juninho, Roberto Carlos, Christian Vieri, Benny McCarthy, Steve Bull, Carlton Palmer etc etc, etc....

There's a mention of it in SGT's programme notes around the time, he wanted Lineker after we got promoted but it would have meant using the entire transfer budget for the next 18 months.

Just imagine, no Nigel Callaghan...

Andy Cole and Pippo Inzaghi were born offside as the saying goes. Goal-hanging bastids.

We're going to win the treble. Fuck it, why enter a tournament you have zero hope of winning? That's not sport.

It is highly unlikely, but bollocks to it, let's do it.

You're quite greedy for a vegan.

I went to a evening with he who walks on water a couple of weeks back, he said he wanted to sign Cole but there was no chance of getting him.

Venglos signed Penrice.

Might not have had the funds though had we got Lineker!

SGT did a brilliant job with us, and he signed Platt, McGrath and Yorke for a combined sum of £700,000 or so which wasn't even a great deal then. Other managers since have made some great signings, Big Ron a team full of them. I think a lot of the ones i mentioned were pie in the sky and most likely bigged up by Doug that we were 'in the running' to sell season tickets.
The infuriating ones were Juninho and Robbie Keane who he just needed to go a little further with the finances to secure but didn't.

England canter to their first legitimate World Cup triumph, despite H&V collectively moaning like fuck after every victory along the way.

That's not unlikely as such - big window from world cup up to Boxing day.

I think Villa Park is mentioned as one of the few grounds that Gary Lineker never scored at
A stat that probably wouldn’t have changed even if he’d signed for us

A similar thing with Les Ferdinand under Brian, worked out for the best in the end.
