Very true Dave, it really shouldn't be played.  The Boxing day fixture should be an event, this year it just seems farcical.

We’ve decided not to go today. First time in about 30 years we’ve chosen not to go to a home game. Combination of kick off time, travel and covid.

I’ve given myself an 11:00 deadline to decide. My sensible side is telling me to give it a miss but the Villa fan side of me is saying the opposite.

Yes, I'm with you on this. Same reasons.

There are no trains today so I couldn't come up if I wanted to but I have family in Brum so could have come up on Christmas Eve.

However the late Burnley game postponement and the increasing Covid cases have made the decision for me.

Will be a little odd watching it on TV but there you go.

Going but I can't deny the fact that my decision is influenced by the fact that I've missed the last 3 home games.
Pre match pub meet up isn't happening though.

Good piece DW.  One of your best.  Nobody does chagrin like you do.  I am not going because I would poke pins in my eyes if they call off the game when we are on the A14/M6.  I love your pen sketch of the father/son/Villa relationship.  Except with us, the role you ascribe to the elder, fits the behaviour of the younger.  We are four generations whose Villa level headedness is in reverse proporion to years lived.

Have you decided what you're going to be when you eventually grow up?

Good read. It was difficult to get further than the first line as I have my father in hospital since the 21st and likely to be in there until at least the end of the year. We have been Facetiming him (another day I'll go into detail just how amazing the NHS nurses are) but got little response mainly due to his tiredness and the drugs. The only thing he did say to me on Christmas Eve was "How are the Villa doing?". Yesterday as we can't visit we sent in some photos of the family and his Villa scarf, a scarf I'm pretty sure he's had since the 77 season. He was wearing it in bed last night and seemed to be a lot happier.

Funny you mention Boxing Day not being a good day for us; when I look back to Boxing Day games at Villa Park we always seemed to win, normally giving West Ham a Christmas stuffing. I won't be complaining if we only beat Chelsea today by a single goal. We can save the stuffing for Leeds.
