If Young is the latter I’m not hopeful.

We really do have a problem in midfield don't we?  Has to be Ramsey, McGinn and Carney for me, simply because there don't seem to be any other options.  I bet our new boss is desperate to see the transfer window open. If Ashley Young is the answer, we really are in trouble.

Can't Axel play DM?

Just have to stick him in there and hope he can stick his foot in and break up some attacks.

Then McGinn (although he'll have to be disciplined not to get forward much) and then one of Ramsey/Carney.

Sticking Young as the DM would really sum up our season wouldn't it so can't believe that's a serious option.

I have a horrible feeling we are going to be Stev.ie G's claranbluearmee.

Nailed on, and you can take it to the bank Mr. W.

I want us to win games. If it prompts singing the managers name, even if it is a little vomit inducing I’m fine with it. Better that than losing week after week.

Is Ings out injured still? I've heard conflicting news on that.

Given SG's proclivity for 4-2-3-1 he could go :

                Emi
Cash  Konsa  Mings  Targett
       McGinn  Nakamba
    Buendia  Ings  Bailey
               Watkins

I think we'll win and the fans will make the atmosphere electric.

I understand it is
4 3 2 1
He pushes the fullbacks on and 2 number 10s behind a centre forward

I think Axel can play in that position.  Good call.

In Tuanzebe's case that's the bench. He's weak as piss and clumsy.

After two weeks of meh we finally have a match and I feel bit more positive today. Hopefully we start our season proper today. And please beat these buggers, lots of these Blue stripey shirts around here now since they got that new stadium.
Early red for Maupay please.

From The Analyst

Gerrard, or ‘Stevie G’ to his admirers, knows that his Aston Villa team have slipped up on numerous occasions this season, throwing away a 2-0 lead at home to Wolves matchweek eight being the most painful. Brighton and Hove Albion will be the subject of Gerrard’s first Premier League team talk, and he’ll surely point out that the south coast thinkers have gone six Premier League matches without a win. Even so, Graham Potter’s team haven’t lost away from home yet but that’s not good enough for the supercomputer, which gives Villa, sorry, ‘Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa’, a 41.5% chance of victory.

As a new manager, you'd surely want to make some sort of statement about what your selections will look like and why they are better than the previous guy in charge. Otherwise, we may as well of kept him!
I think the interesting thing here is that there isn't anyone that hasn't been picked that the fans have been clamouring to see. It's not like Smith was leaving anyone out or anything, we've just had lots of injury issues.
Well, and playing 3 at the back, the players not being fit enough and poor substitutions.

That's a different issue. I'm talking about the players. When there's a managerial change, the fans are usually wanting someone different to play. And there's none of that this time.

I suppose it means a lot of people felt our poor run had less to do with the players we have and more to do with how they were managed. We'll see in a month's or two's time. I am not convinced about the quality of our squad, nor how we were setup to play so I can claim victory either way.
