My first Villa shirt had the 1969-1973 blue lion atop the AV.   I vaguely remember that the seven year-old me felt disappointed that it wasn't the same crest that adorned the Trinity Road stand.  Now I really like its pared down simplicity.  Whether it works in the twenty-first century world of merchandise and corporate branding is another matter - although as others have said, Spurs and Liverpool have moved away from crests that looked like every heraldic symbol possible had to be included to a simple cockerel and liver bird.
The Chelsea one is quite nice too.

Better. That should be on everything from scarves to players' contracts.

This might be up there with admitting to owning a caravan, but I really like what they did with the Spurs badge.

I agree, but we have a lion, which is fairly commonplace, so I'm not sure it would work for us.

Whereas Tottenham had an advantage because a cock and singular ball hasn't been seen in European popular culture since 1945.

The current fashion is to strip logos back, (spurs, bin dippers) so we’ll probably just have a gold lion on the next home shirt.
I'd be perfectly happy with that.  Bit like the 1874 crest.

This is possibly the best invocation of Godwin's Law yet. 🙂

Me too.  Think it'd look really good, and we could quite reasonably have a black away kit with a red lion for the 150th anniversary.

The current one is by far the worst, I hate everything about it, including its association with the Lerner era. I can't believe it hasn't be redone to be honest. Of the old ones, the round badge is the best followed by the blue shield with the claret lion. I don't mind the stripey shield with the gold lion, although this is mainly due to associating it with a relatively successful period in our history, rather than any artitisic merit it has.

This.

Also, the placement of the star is terrible.

The lion badge with 'AV' underneath on the 1971 League Cup Final shirt is very smart.
