Tales of Old
« on: October 01, 2021, 07:53:31 AM »
Have you heard any old football tales and want to try and find out whether they're true?

I have a couple:-

One is that Villa we're winning 2-0 in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane against Tottenham. Their fans stormed the pitch and the game was abandoned. We had to replay them at WHL, they won the replay and went on to lift the Cup.

No idea if this is true.

The other is that about 15 years after most of the Preston Invincible's team had retired, they weren't happy with how the current crop of players were getting on and challenged them to a match, which they duly won.

Anybody know whether they are true, or have their own tales to ask about?

We were winning 1-0 in the Tottenham FA Cup game. 20/02/1094.
The Penny Illustrated Paper dated Saturday 27 February 1904 has a photo of it:

The latter story is basically the plot of "Ripping Yarns".

I posted one obscure piece on the ManUtd match thread regarding the origins of the term Manure for them

This ManU chap reckoned it was mocking the Munich disaster, as  in, ‘Your team is manure, rotting in the ground’
I, along with many others, had never heard of it and think it was a load of rubbish, but he produced a clip from ‘Echoes of the Kop’ that was from 2009.

I’d love to call him out on this as he was pretty smug about it.

They just can't bear anyone not calling them "United". Which is why anyone who does refer to them as such is a pathetic fanboy.

Sheffield United are the only ones that can lay claim to being called "United".

Hmm, so the Tottenham FA Cup isn't from when they won the Cup at least. Was wondering if it was 1921, as they knocked us out in the Quarters, at their place. Evidently not.

Sure I also heard that the phrase 'Sick as a Parrot' comes from Tottenham. Can't remember the story, but think this has been corroborated.

Nice to see a Bovril and Oxo section of the stand. Obviously an early example of the Tiswas/Swop Shop, Sausage/Egg type rivalry.

The parrot one is because when they were voted out of the first division and Arsenal took their place their pet parrot died on the same day, reputedly after hearing the news.

Some more theories here including one reference to Tottingham.

Same with me.
It’s just that this MU chap pulled a guy up on calling them Manure, then produced this photo of an article from the Echoes of the Kop, which is Liverpool based.
I might message EotK and ask them

Newton Heath / Small Heath are quite disparaging names.
