Right, I’ve steeled myself for a ‘that never happened’ response.

I’d just posted my reply to Rory when who should I bump into but my old friend Glenroy George, older brother of Apex to Zulu author David. Glenroy is a veteran of late seventies Holte End incursions by Chelmsley Blues firm the Trooper mob, the riot I was on about in Scotland, and several England tournaments abroad. He read the last few posts and was completely incredulous. In fact, he was so animated about the theory of Blues fans not supporting England I said ‘steady on’  as we walked into the shop. He’s just got back today from Belfast, where he went with the first guy I mentioned above, to watch the England game with Loyalist friends of theirs.

Small world innit?

Fucking hell, Percy. You don't half walk the walk.

If I ran into somebody who told me that they'd just got back from Belfast after watching England with their loyalist friends I wouldn't be showing them my phone, I'd be showing them a clean pair of heels!

So he was reading H&V in pretty much real time? Has he got alerts set up or something?

And I'm not worried about his UVF connections, I've got the 'ra on standby

(BV, you've still got my back, yeah?)

Or that photo of Bobby Sands you keep in your wallet, Paddy?

I hate Rangers, and the club formerly known as Rangers, more than I hate Blues, Albion, Man Utd, Liverpool, Hearts and Bayern Munich combined. However the funniest football chant I've ever been told about, by a non-rabid Rangers fan, was sung during the hunger strikes in one of their Old Firm games. Obviously to the tune of  I'd Rather be a Hammer than a Nail: "do you want a chicken supper, Bobby Sands?"

I cling to that as evidence that I'm above sectarianism.

Ah okay. Well, it was a ridiculous claim, but not a serious one. The guy's a troll.

And the Celtic fans very loudly chant ‘MP!’ after each mention of his name.

I’ve known them 40/50 years and been in situations where one word from them could have got me battered, but it’s never happened. They’re not gonna start beating me up outside Asda.

Funnily enough, I had to trust Glenroy with my wife’s brand new bike a couple of months ago. I rode to Asda on it and forgot to take the lock with me. The security bloke on the door wouldn’t look after it, he said kids have been known to cause a distraction while their mates nick the bike he’s supposed to be looking after. As luck would have it, Glenroy was entering the shop and he stood there with it whilst I picked up a few bits. As I walked round I worried that it would be considered excellent ‘bantz’ if he’d rode off with it himself but when I finished shopping he was still there next to the security guard, good as gold, looking after the bike.

Further to this, Celtic fans have an almost Beowulfesque epic chant to the same tune.

They’ll be jumping out the windows when we win,
They’ll be jumping out the windows when we win,
They’ll be jumping out the windows
Jumping out the windows,
Jumping out the windows when we win.

And I hope it’s forty storeys when they jump,
I hope it’s forty storeys when they jump,
And I hope it’s forty storeys,
Hope it’s forty storeys,
Hope it’s forty storeys when they jump.

And I hope it’s spiky railings when they land
I hope it’s spiky railings when they land,
I hope it’s spiky railings,
GREEN spiky railings,
I hope it’s spiky railings when they land.

Singing I’m no a Billy I’m a Tim (THANK FUCK)
I’m no a Billy I’m a Tim (THANK FUCK)
Singing I’m no a Billy,
I’m not so fucking silly,
I’m no a Billy I’m a Tim - THANK FUCK!

My favourite bit of that is that they hope they land on GREEN spiky railings
