Being in London is a big advantage over us. Same as us being in Birmingham gives us an advantage over say Norwich.

Anfield lost out on an undisclosed "global act" owing to rules around when the stadium can host major concerts, officials from Liverpool FC have claimed.

The club lodged a planning application with the city council to change when it can host gigs such as last month's Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance shows.

Current rules mean there must be a 31-day window in July when no events – footballing or otherwise – can take place to allow residents respite.

Another huge win for UK planning laws.

Anfield attracted a large band and bagged 120,000 that London didn't last week. All the major acts tour heavily in the North West at Anfield, Old Trafford  (Lancs CC), Ethiad or at the Co-op & MEN. I don't think there is a geographical advantage for Spurs when it comes to international artists and not with domestic either, as the really, really big ones nip round the North Circular to Wembley.

I disagree with your assertion that Spurs do not have a geographical advantage:

Lady Gaga: Chromatica Ball tour did 2x dates at Spurs with no other UK dates.
Beyonce: Renaissance tour did 5x dates at Spurs and single dates in Scotland/Wales.
Beyonce: Cowboy Carter tour did 6x dates at Spurs with no other UK dates.
Post Malone: Big ASS Stadium tour did 2x dates at Spurs with no other UK dates.
Gorillaz: Mountain tour only UK date was Spurs.
Bad Bunny: Debí Tirar Más Fotos World tour did 2x dates at Spurs with no other UK dates.
BTS: Ararang tour will play 2x dates at Spurs with no other UK dates.
System of a Down will play 2x dates at Spurs with no other UK dates.
NFL in the UK has only ever been played at Spurs, Twickenham or Wembley.

And then even when artists play Villa Park and equivalent venues, such as Kendrick Lamar: Grand National tour, Spurs put on 2x dates over our single date.

They have a revenue stream advantage that even Utd/City/Pool will not be able to match.

Good info, and good luck to them. There’s still loads we could do. We’ve only just dipped our toes in the water.

Because the immediate infrastructure of the ground allows it to be cheaper and there's less restrictions on Spurs planning wise to enable these events. The Anfield post above demonstrates it. Liverpool CC choose to hold Anfield back.

Last week around Anfield, the promoter paid for all the traffic amendment, anti-terror etc, that are already inherent at Spurs.

The 30+ monute walk to Seven Sisters or backing onto Broadwater Farm... less so.

Edit: what we need to do, isn't be 30 minutes from public transport. We need to invest, for dramticslly less than an Evan Guessand, in facilities that make Villa Park a cheaper choice for promoters and lobby with BCC for easing of planning restrictions to host more gigs year round.

I do wish people would give Birmingham more love, rather than assuming nobody in the world would come here unless forced. If the people from here go on about it being crap, what hope do we have?

As UK cities go, Birmingham is right up there with the best of them.* The majority of people who take the piss are people who either haven't been here at all, or haven't been in decades.

*. And the only one where people talk proper.

There is surely a geographical advantage in being within the largest conurbation in Europe? In the same way as has been written, that Birmingham has a geographical advantage over say Norwich?

There will always be planning limitations on having events in residential areas. Tottenham is still mixed, but the residential is on the whole slightly removed from the stadium. Presumably at Anfield the residential is more impacted.

Broadwater Farm is a 1/2 hour walk away from the Tottenham stadium, and White Hart Lane station is only a 5 minute walk away.

I was not putting down Birmingham at all. As an outsider, I think it's brilliant and I've visited as a tourist many times - in fact I am taking my young family for a weekend away in Birmingham tomorrow morning.

As much as I love the city, London is more attractive to the very biggest touring artists and this is unlikely to ever change significantly. Therefore Spurs have access to higher events revenue streams than us, and even the likes of Pool/City/Utd.

Spurs are well within the financial rules as they exist currently, but I would not be surprised if before long, the rest of the "financial six" try to correct this advantage via proposing rule change.

Regarding events/concerts, that is why they're adding another vehicle access at the North/Witton corner (same as in the Witton/Holte corner), they can double the number of events possible in the summer just by improving the logistics.

Yep. It takes twice as long to set up and you lose a lot of seating. At Anfield as a recent example the front of the Kop was lost and ~third of the Main Stand and Kenny Dalglish, so it was ~60,000 people, with limited access via Kop corners onto the pitch. The bars are football bars, so the piss they're selling is much slower and the football to gig venue takes twice as long for loading as Spurs, with signficant adaptions outside compared to a normal match day. That's all cost. I get the potential for 9m people v 5.6m conurbation, but I am not hugely convinced. There is massive appetite and demand for concert going venues of sclae in the UK.
