Wilson is a condescending prick, regardless of any relevent points he made.

If he took the same attitude with the likes of Guardiola, Arteta or the talking thumb at Liverpool I might listen, but it's endless think pieces about their various struggles and not one (that I can remember) that goes along the lines of "You've spent £250m on new players whilst potential competitors have their hands tied, shut up and get on with it"

Normally I don’t have any of that ‘the media hate us’ thing but Jonathan Wilson has clearly got a problem with us and has shown it multiple times in his writing.

He’s a Sunderland fan. Maybe he’s just never got over the 1913 Cup final.

I've read bits he's done on Newcastle (when he can lower himself) and noticed the same tone too.

On the Guardian football podcast, around about the time we'd just been promoted, an American, just getting into football, emailed in and asked which team he should follow if he didn't want to pick one of the usual suspects. He was looking for potential, the ability to become one of the usual suspects (not on a tourist visa like Leicester). I can't remember who else was on but they all equivocated. Jonathan Wilson's immediate reply was Aston Villa. I don't think he hates us at all (he hates Newcastle, for obvious reasons).

I dont think there is an agenda or anything - it was just a poor article in my opinion.

They all loved us when we came up, famous old club, stadium etc. Then first we bought some players, and everyone got upset and said we were 'doing a Fulham', then we stayed up and everyone got upset because Hawkeye failed in a game towards the end of the season, then we had the best player in the country that got the shit kicked out of him by all and sundry but everyone got upset because he 'dived', then we appointed an 'Ingalnd legund' and binned him because he was shite, and everyone got upset because we didn't give him a chance.

But the worst thing we did was appoint the best manager in the league, because then they had to actually watch us and do some analysis outside of their existing framework and that's like hard work.

I've had a large weekend and it's possible that I'm still to properly land back on the planet, but I think everyone is lovely and there are way more important people to be upset about than Jonathan Wilson.

What I find interesting is that there is some booing for the Premier League anthem before games but there was nothing for the UEFA anthem and our summer difficulties were caused by the European rules rather than the Premier League rules, which we used the Chelsea path of selling the women's team to sail through

Oh of course, but I'm blotting out real news as it's just too shit to deal with so I only have inconsequential shit like this to get worked up about, and as I used to like Wilson I think it's worse.

He's like the Kings of Leon to me, suckered me in with fake authenticity and excellent early works only to reveal himself as a massive corporate whore.

Oh, I agree, I'm not making out he's like Hamas or Coldplay, he just seems to nurse a grudge at times.

Engaging with football journalism as a Villa fan is a bit like being a shagger. It's all fascinating stuff, great to see a different perspective and all that, and you'd do it all again, but it's not going to offer you much comfort when you really need it.

The current rules are absolute bollocks and clearly only designed to protect the status quo (don't even think about it). No idea why anyone would be rushing to defend them. It's like hearing Boris Johnson talking and assuming he is acting altruistically, you'd have to be gullible as fuck.

I'm sure you'd feel just as strongly if Villa were  11th in League One.

I personally don't see a problem in the rules being shaped and suited to, preferably, favour us and us alone. Perhaps there's too much Aussie in my sporting view, but frankly, if it isn't benefiting us- meh.

Loved Youth and Young Manhood as an album, and it's just gone downhill ever since. The worst thing was going to see a gig and them only playing a couple of tracks from it and the rest....

Meh, he does have a point that the club was feeling way too sorry for itself, that we knew exactly what trouble we'd be running into and we still went ahead and let Gerrard spunk all that money on Coutinho.

Wilson does leave out the ways in which the game is rigged to help the top clubs maintain their revenue advantages, the most hilariously transparent of which was the organising of the 'Club World Cup'. And yes, he can be pompous, and he loves bringing up, like, Derrida or Dutch minimalist architecture or whatever.

I saw them at the old Hummingbird when they were touring 'Youth and Young Manhood' and they hadn't got enough songs to fill a set, played different versions of a couple songs to pad it out. The next one there was a riot (the second album was good as well) but after that they went the full U2.
