For the welfare of Premier League players the top flight are going to announce Concussion Substitutes.
Detailed more in report and source below (The Athletic , David Ornstein)

Essentially teams will be able to permanently substitute players who have sustained a concussion.

They are using their heads with this one. And is for the good of the players. This is rather historic.

Let the discussion begin:

Seems fairly sensible. Have no issue with this. I would also like scumbag clubs like Arsenal deducted points if they force or allow a player to carry on playing when he has suffered a serious head injury.

The wanker clubs will have been working out how to fake concussion since this was announced. Brown envelopes will be popping through letterboxes of wankers in black, club doctors and sponge blokes before we've all had breakfast.

It does open the door to potential shithousery, you know arseholes like Warnock who cry "player safety" will look for a way to exploit it and of course Bingo ONLY has the players interest at heart, he said so when bellyaching about having 5 subs.

But cynicism apart, the actions of the disingenuous shouldn't stop what is a worthy addition to the game.

Anybody who is substituted for potential concussion should have to sit out the next match as a precaution. Easiest way of making sure a worthy rule is not exploited.

Call me cynical, but it's interesting time how teams will be able to make 2 concussion substitutes in addition to the regular 3 after certain sides failed to get 5 substitutes passed and moaned about it. I hope it's used how it's intended but I can see the lines becoming blurred.

To understand concussion  subs we first have to understand concussion  - here it is defined by NHS: "Concussion is a temporary injury to the brain caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head.
It usually only lasts up to a few days or weeks, although it sometimes needs emergency treatment and some people can have longer-lasting problems"

I wonder if the new concussion subs rule should be expanded and termed as 'head injury replacements'
And any form of head injury and potential of concussion rather than being called "concussion sub" Head injuries and knocks to the head occur more frequently and exist far more than incidents like fractured skull of Jimenez but David Luiz head injury in the same incident should see him substituted too i would like under these new rules.

To me any player who is concussed or has suspected concussion during a game must be taken off and cannot return.
And any head injury could be suspected concussion but medical assessment will determine if such a head injury means they can't continue the match and also to when they can return to play football again So really on head injuries, like any sign of blood or bumps should not just be bandaged up , unless it's a cut to the eye, but come off the pitch and not be allowed to carry on. That's why the term head injury replacement may be useful and how it helps me understand the new substituted rule

I hope the rule is made clear to all in football for protocol.
As it could lead to issues when a player carries on playing or a manager keeping him on. If its not clear. As it's very clear to me concussion or suspected concussion occurs from a blow to the head
It will take a while and for some players and old school managers who have always played on through injury to accept going off with a head injury and the last thing we want to see is players ranting insisting they are still OK like a boxer who wants to go on (maybe they even are seemingly ok)  but now it's going to be clear with rules in place. Very good that steps have been taken for player welfare.

I'd wager certain clubs have already figured out the signal from the bench that indicates 'next chance you get go down holding your noggin' ie Liverpool, Man United, Olbiyun, Burnley.

I think the grief that teams would get when they were, inevitably, found out, would not be worth the benefit of making an extra tactical sub. See also the Bloodgate Scandal in rugby union.

When the first substitute was allowed it was one sub for an injured player. Amazingly, players suddenly developed a limp. The FA then changed the rules so anyone could be subbed.

Fascinating! Great histrionic info

If clubs want to fake it I don't really care, they'll soon be found out, because this is a necessary change that should've come in a long time ago. Clubs and players being under pressure to play on with a head injury so they aren't 'punished' by going down to 10 men is a pathetic situation given the long-term problems with head injuries that we can see in retired players. Personally I'd even allow a subbed player to go back on for this as well which is far more open for abuse but is the best way to ensure the problem is taken seriously.

Yep I thought this too, then there's the issue of people not going off again, in case they miss their derby, or match against their biggest rivals etc.

Something has to be done though, both to deal with concussion and to stop blatant cheating.

Surely the simplest solution if people are worried about cheating is to have an impartial doctor as part of the team of officials and have him be the person that makes the decision.

I think the only real deterrent to prevent dodgy concussion subs is to put them on a coach and take them to a village in the middle of nowhere and make them find their way home.  It worked a treat for Lenny Godber, a fellow Villan too.
