It was an exciting time when he joined us. To my memory it's the only time we've appointed a manager successful in both England and Europe. What might have been. Rest well.

Sad news. Condolences to his friends and family.
He seemed like a lovely guy and very popular throughout the game.

A charming gentleman of the game - and there arn't many of those about anymore

I always thought he was just on the cusp of turning us around - sadly health issues put a stop to all that

RIP

A proper gentleman of the game in an era where there aren't many of them. Such a shame that his tenure was cut short at Villa Park just as he was beginning to build something good. RIP Gerard Houllier.

Sad news but not a huge shock. He's had very serious heart problems for years. We were starting to play some decent stuff towards the end of his time with us.

Best and worst games under Houllier (RIP) for me.
League Wolves 2-1 away win (Heskey 88th minute winner)
League Man City 1-0 home win (Bent's debut goal, but also personal for me because of a Man City supporting boss who was a right w-nker)
League L'pool away 3-0 loss (team played with too much respect for L'pool, but Villa fans were class on the night..."let's cheer like we've scored a goal")
FA cup Man City 3-0 away loss (A weakened team played in the last 16 of the cup resulting in capitulation on a long weekday evening annoyingly. Also personal see above)

The signing of Bent and his winning goal on his debut was probably the highlight. The Citeh cup loss was the low point. If I remember right one of Houllier's first games was at home to Manure and we went 2-0 up with quite a young line up but Manure pulled it back to 2-2.

For all the rumours of players he was supposed to have fallen out with he was clearly loved and highly respected by a lot of others. Was watching Darren Bent and Danny Murphy earlier and read some stuff from Carragher. This from our wonderful former skipper Stan

I think he'd have been a good manager for us given the right circumstances. RIP.

I didn't want to overdo it ;-)

In hindsight, he would have been ideal for the club had there been settled structure in place to build something.

He wasn't the right fit for a club fighting fires while it began to slide down a hill
