I guess it's tough to judge even for the experts in the game. Look at Ben Woodburn at Liverpool, hailed as the next big thing and played for Wales at 17, now on loan at Oxford Utd and has had a couple of bad foot injuries.

I'd forgotten about him, yep he was touted as going to be something special, and in fairness the odds bits I saw of him he did look like he'd make it.

There are highly-rated young players who make even bigger falls. Dan Crowley, for example.

Mike Calvin wrote an excellent book about football scouts",The Nowhere Men,"I think it was called. It featured scouts keeping up to date on Gary Gardner's progress in Villa's  youth games and how Jude Bellingham was going to be a superstar.
What has always baffled me is how many,in my day,ex England schoolboy and youth internationals failed to make the grade.Somebody published a list of our youngest debutants and a good percentage of them failed to have a career with us.Yet there was a time  in the 70s and 80s when England no.9s ,Regis,Mariner and Birtles had played at non league level.Withe had played for Barrow (?) and the Blues.
'The Guardian' publishes a 'Young Generation'  , a yearly list of the best talent from Premier League clubs.Again for the supposed best talent, the casualty rate is high. The career trajectory of major European nations' footballers seem ,to my limited knowledge ,to be more straight forward, playing for the national team at various age groups and then playing in elite football.
We seem to be copying that with Southgate picking previous u21s such as the talented Mason Mount.Is/was it a difference in coaching, assessment of players,a
blindness to physical development in young players ,such as Phil Jones being regarded as a great player ?

I think you have to remember that most of the team we're playing in the U23s right now are technically still U18 players, previously we'd have had 6-7 20-23 year olds in the team and the U18 would slowly replace them. It's a completely intended change and 4-5 years at that age is a huge gap so I think it's to make them experience that big step in physicality and quality earlier so when the next one comes between U23 and seniors it's less of a shock, particularly if there's a season of L2-championship football in there as well.

To add to Legions list Chukwuemeka and philgene-bidace have something about them as well, and then there's all the new lads that have come in this summer. I've been given another name as well but I can't remember it right now, lad in the U15s who plays on the wing but will probably end up as a midfielder, apparently he's a bit special.

I think whilst the lads need and learn from playing in games like last night, to put the whole team in against men does not particularly help.  They need two or three older heads alongside them to give them both the guidance and, if necessary, physical application.  Now the "second string" are out of the league cup there was nothing to stop some of them being used to help out the youngsters.

Michael Johnson at Man City. Still only 32.

U18s  are leading 1-0 away at spurs. Bogarde with the goal.

Won 2-0 but had Swinkels sent off, straight red.  Abldeen-Goodridge with the second.

You would think Jacob would be playing since he wasn't involved last night.

I wonder if he has the deathly powers of his namesake.
