Holte Enders in the sky - the song
« on: April 11, 2020, 11:03:47 AM »
Probably a question for some of the Children of the revolution era.

Does anyone know when we started singing this, and why? I've been going since the late 70s and can always remember us singing this chant, so it must be from way back in the day. Also has there ever been more words/lines to the chant?

I think it came out in 1974.  There were a couple of western type songs used back then.

There's 3 verses to it but for some reason, 1 of the verses has been dropped.

I always thought it referred to those of us who were singing it at the back of the Holte and due to the size of the stand we were singing it from very high above? Probably totally wrong!

Did it originate before or after they partitioned the stand? I can't remember now...

That verse is still sung - It's the "fists of granite/coshes made of lead" that has disappeared.

Don't shoot the messenger:

As I walked onto the Holte one dark and windy day,
I spied a poor blues fan a running far away
I said to that poor blues fan it's time for you to die
He said I know sir I've just seen Holte Enders in the sky

He ran down the terraces and then ran towards the gate
Little did he know death was to be his fate
He had one more short hour to live and then he'd hear the cry
That every city fan does fear: Holte Enders in the sky

Their fists where just like granite and their pockets full of lead,
And when they catch a city fan, you know he'll end up dead
Cause Villa fans rule Birmingham and city fans know why,
they've all seen and they've all heard Holte Enders in the sky,

Remember this coming up before one of the derbies a while ago. Was totally oblivious to the true chant as stated above!

I imagine it has a much different context to most who sing it, more so when eventually we play infront of crowds again.
