And a result and performance  that very few expected. Super display from the team.

While I welcome all and any signs of improvement, I'm surprised that Dean Smith turning into John Gregory is what's sparked it.

Spot on Dave. As an eternal optimist I was unusually down before the game but back to my old self at the end.

Good article. Nyland has looked ten times the keeper i thought he was and Mings is imperious on this form. I loved the comment about "magic happens when the fates combine" it's true. We really can be that 12th man when we're in good voice. If the players can play with the same intensity as last night and we can get Villa Park rocking anything really is possible.

Key point is they didnt collapse in the last 15 minutes and we have a shot in a one off match for the second leg. Onwards and upwards.

I saw your Brave comment on the match thread and I'd never had you down as Sir Humphrey before that...

To be honest, I don't think the formation was a startling one, with no strikers playing AEG up front seemed logical.

That we also went with 3 at the back was a positive.

A good, positive piece, Dave. I agree particularly about Nyland, who played very well not only last night but whenever he was selected this season.
