Our Captain?
« on: September 02, 2019, 09:46:39 PM »
The excellent decision to make Grealish captain last season marked a serious turning point in our fortunes and he did a great job. Do you think he should continue to wear the armband or perhaps should it be given to Mings who has shown plenty of leadership qualities whilst on loan and now as a fully-fledged Villa player possibly taking the pressure off Jack?

An arguable point from me, but I honestly think we might have gone out and signed a captain as I think we needed a bit more premier league experience.  I don't like keepers as captains but Heaton was a great signing, I felt though, that we needed more experience further forward.  Mings is a decent shout but has no more experience than Grealish when it comes to the Premier Division.   To ram my point home, other than Jack, Heaton or Mings, I genuinely cannot think of another player in the squad who would be a better choice than the three I've mentioned. No, not even SJM to be fair.  I know Elmo did the Crewe game, but you'd want your captain to be a permanent fixture in the starting line up.

Why would you take it off Jack? Talisman and fan. It's good to have leaders all over the pitch and Tyrone does a good job of being one of those.

We don't have leaders all over the pitch.  We have a keeper, maybe two centre backs and one midfielder, with leadership abilities, arguably.  This is part of the issue.

Mings is simply another captain. No need to change.

Jack just needs to be told to play 30 yards further forward.  He would be so much more effective.

Jack has done nothing wrong, taking the captaincy off him would be a bad move, potentially damaging team spirit.

It's been a bit of a slow start/tricky adjustment for Jack by his high standards (don't know if the 20 PL games thing affected his confidence) and he certainly needs to be further up the pitch to have a greater impact as people are saying. We ideally don't want him doing too many challenges on the wrong side in the box like the one he did in the Everton game. I wouldn't take the captaincy off him, especially so early on in the season though, as I think it could affect him in a negative way even more and I'm pretty sure he's gonna and the whole team will come good and get up to speed shortly.

I wouldn't take it off Jack, but I do thing Tyrone would be a better captain.  I always prefer defenders to be organising things where possible.  I also think that the extra responsibility might be weighing on Jack a bit this season.  He's made two mistakes in games now that have led to us dropping points.

For the good of the team.

Mings.

The bloke is a born leader.

You don't strip someone of the captaincy unless they do something wrong, or they lose their place in the team through poor form, injury or suspension. Pointless debate.

Tyrone is a clear leader but doesn't need an armband to do it.

By all accounts, Jack demands high standards in and around training etc, there's no way I'd take it off him unless he does something seriously wrong.
