I don't know - Brookes,  OHD and Jeets should give Essex problems. They reckon spin will be key on the wicket prepared, so Jeets should shine. I like the faith shown in the young players this season after numerous injury problems.

I think those 3 are superb for us currently, but expecting them to take 20 wickets against a very strong Essex side might be a bit much to ask. I agree that the faith shown in the younger players is encouraging and should set us up well for the next few years but I still think aiming to not lose this one (and to pick up 5-6 bonus points) is the pragmatic choice to keep us safely ahead of Notts. I think the slow and steady scoring today was a reflection of that.

Get that right and we can take the same approach when we play them next week and be safe with a match to spare, pretty much regardless of what they do this week or in the last round.

Totally agree paul_e lets just stay up by whatever means and push on next season with a more experienced line up.

Kent have the upper hand against Notts today.

Wasn't sure what we would do this morning. It was a choice between batting to preserve wickets or hitting out in search of two bonus points.

We seem to have found a cunning compromise between the two... losing loads of wickets while not scoring any runs.

We’ve quietly gone about things this morning, despite losing 3 early wickets. Notts are 90-5 against Kent so they’re struggling. If we can manage maximum bowling points and not lose then our game against Notts next week should prove to be meaningless. I think Notts have to win all three of their remaining matches including the current one and rely on other results going their way to avoid the drop. As it stands we should be ok.

For all of the bad luck with injuries we’ve made steady progress in red ball cricket this year with some of the younger players coming through looking like real prospects.

The Bears are 360-6 at lunch whilst Notts are 104-5, still 200 runs behind Kent.

Yep, that's about the state of it, a draw for us in this would confirm their relegation this week if they don't win, I think.

Bears move onto 400 for 6 against Essex. Lamb 133*, Hain 82, Sibley 51, Brookes 45*.

We got three batting points.

Notts have got none, having been dismissed for 124 by Kent who made 304 in their innings. Kent have just started batting again having chosen not to enforce the follow-on.

If Notts lose, Bears need to take a minimum six wickets the first 110 overs AND avoid defeat to guarantee survival.

In the title race, Somerset have recovered after a poor first innings of 199 all out. Yorkshire could only manage 103 in reply and Somerset are currently 107 for 2 in their second innings, adding extra pressure on our opponents Essex.

Bears now 502/9. Well done to Matt Lamb - 173 is an excellent knock. Hose might struggle to regain his place. Notts getting hammered by Kent. Essex bowlers must be knackered! They'll face a testing last hour or so. I think we're safe!

Well we are still batting, which realistically bats Essex out of the game. There’s no way they can score 500 runs plus and bowl us out cheaply then knock off as many runs as they need. With just over 6 sessions of play left and Kent piling on the runs against Notts, we are looking comfortable.

517 all out with their spinner Harmer taking 6-143 off just under 60 overs. Over to you Jeets.

Essex 31-1 at stumps. Patel got Sir Chef for 7.

Notts and Kent are still playing with Kent’s lead now over 400.

Nah but he was out with the bat for a decent amount of time so they probably decided to rest him given it was only a short spell and Jeets was always going to be first change.

Notts lost, Bears need one more point and to not lose to guarantee survival.

We might have to wait till next match for the next bonus point, though. We have thirty overs to take three wickets or more wickets, Essex are 207 for 3. Unless we lose, Somerset have gained the upperhand in the title race by beating Yorkshire comfortably.
