Our Holy Grail

In the 19 seasons since the turn off the century...…10 third & 4 fourth round eliminations in the FA cup! Bad taste in my mouth.

After the 2000 capitulation I knew I would never see us win it in my lifetime.

We've just been terrible in it for decades....two completely terrible cup finals in over 60 years now. Mad when you look at all the good sides in the 80s and 90s we couldn't win it or even make a final then.

It will only become realistic for us to win it again when we have a club structure like at Man. City or Chelsea. So not any time soon in the near future.

I'd rather we be in the Premier League now. We have no serious chance of winning it anyway as things are.

One step at a time.  Our holy grail at the moment is promotion, stability, then the Cup.  It doesn't excuse the performance yesterday or any of the previous seasons though.

It was there for the taking that year. Chelsea were no great shakes, we could have beaten them if only we'd gone for it. I've never watched it back and never will, but I can't remember a single chance we made. It was just a negative, lifeless performance. Still hurts far more than 2015 that one.

I agree with what people say about the 2000 Cup Final, but I still reckon the two big missed opportunities were 1992 and, to a lesser extent, 1980.

Ugo went close with a header from a corner and that was it.

I still believe our day will come, but right now we have more pressing concerns that need addressing.

We need to find a style of play that we can get behind, and build a young squad that can work with it. Success will only come once we shift a lot of deadwood and move away from the revolving door of loans.

Get your pelters ready but I still attach a lot of blame to Saint Gareth for us not turning up in that Chelsea final.  The play off final last year reminded me a lot of that game.  Beaten before we took the field.

I would also say 1990, when we lost to 2nd division Oldham in the 6th round. It was won by Man United, who needed a replay to beat Oldham in the semi, then another replay to beat Palace in the final.

Point taken, but I tend to write off 1990 as we were still engaged in a faltering challenge for the Championship plus the plastic pitch at Boundary Park was a significant home advantage.  In 1992 and 1980 the Cup was the only thing up for grabs.

I reckon we'd have given Liverpool more of a game in the '96 semi if it hadn't been the week after winning at Wembley, but by then I doubt we'd have beaten Man Utd in the final.

2000 was bad but 2015 showed the huge gap between our club and the likes of Arsenal - for me it was humiliating and sadly I've not regained my full enthusiasm for the Villa since - the Bruce period just about knocking the stuffing out of me completely - went yesterday hoping to see the signs of some revival - left deflated after a clueless and gutless display - very sad
