Spot The Autographs (Now With Added 1967!)
« on: September 06, 2018, 05:00:14 PM »
In a wild bout of optimism, my dear wife has dragged me into the garage to clear out stuff prior to our house move (hah!).

Most of my stuff hasn't seen the light of day for decades (programmes, H&Vs, Witton Wisdoms et al.), including this item. It's the back of an old cheque, filled with autographs obtained at Bodymoor Heath in (I think) 1977.

We visited there with my Mother-In-Law (why???) and after watching them train and play a practice match (in those days you just wandered where you liked) we split up to grab signatures. Now, Mother-In-Law knew nothing about football so just collared any likely looking suspect and when we met up again I recognised very few of her victims.

Obviously John Deehan, and I did recognise Allan Evans because we'd just signed him as a young Centre Forward from Dunfermline but had no idea what he looked like. I asked her about him, and she said: "I went up to anyone who looked like a footballer, but he told me not to bother with his because, and I quote, 'You don't want mine, I'm nobody'". Now, as M-I-L was the living embodiment of Mrs. Doyle he stood no chance and signed.

So, the point of this waffle is, does anyone recognise the rest, because she didn't have a clue!

That woman was a (lovely) force of nature (as anyone who tried to decline the offer of a third helping of sprouts will attest). So while we were after Little and Gidman et al., she scooped the big one!

Don't know who is the one below Andy Gray and the last one.

I have a Terry Weir B/W photo of 77 Cup winning squad signed by all, given to me by Michael Buttress who had the driving lesson after my mothers and would drive her home.

The one under Andy Gray, pretty much covered by the watermark, has to be read on the side, Ken McNaught.

Pleasure, Nick, now to get it framed. Will look great in whatever house you end up living.

As I mentioned earlier, I've got a signed Terry Weir photo of the 77 Cup winning squad and I've looked at it once or twice over the years. I didn't even need to dig it out, such is my love and admiration for that team. Certainly the greatest, most entertaining Villa team in my lifetime.

I have the photo in such a safe place I can't remember where it is. I'll have a look for it and post it up on here. Give me a couple of years.

Thanks Mark.
The 76-77 team are up there with the The 74-75 and 80-81 teams as my favourites. I loved all three seasons.
