Target for this season
« on: July 29, 2018, 11:16:56 AM »
What do people think?

This has been very different at various points over the summer. A few weeks back I think most people would have settled for solid mid table and still being a going concern. Now the new owners are in and we might be keeping Jack et al are we thinking top six minimum? Or does FFP/timing of the new owners' arrival mean this is unrealistic?

If we keep Grealish and Chester and can add a decent centre half and striker, we should be in the promotion picture again.  Lot of 'ifs' there though!!

Champions, that’s the target. Stranger things have happened.

We need some players in a couple of  key positions but even now we should think play offs as a bare minimum. I also think Bruce will clearly understand that no excuses will be acceptable in hisc3rd year.

Don't think we'll challenge for top 2 this year.

Top 6 should be realistic although I expect it will be more keep in touch with them for first half of the season and then come on strong after xmas, probably after a managerial change.

Seems pretty conclusive so far. Perhaps I'm being pessimistic but currently we've got a weaker squad and the same manager so promotion doesn't seem likely, certainly not automatically.

I think if we are to go up this year, it will be more Fulham style. Remember they were about 12th in December before storming the second half of the year.

My view is the new ownership will use the first few months to stabilise things off the pitch e.g. make sure we're on track to make FFP commitments and also sort out the CEO position.

They will have banked on SB keeping us around 8th-10th and so 4-5 points off top 6 with 25 games left. It is still a pretty good first 11 at this level after all.

Then a change at xmas as there will obviously be a run of 1 win in 7-8 games at some stage as that's happened in our two seasons under SB.

I would be surprised if that's at the start as we have a pretty kind opening run of 10 fixtures.

Just outside the play-offs. Deal with FFP. Hand Bruce his P45 with thanks at the end of season. Rebuild a side from scratch under a new guy.

We’re Aston Villa. Promotion is the only goal.

Promotion has to be the target.

Looking at the level of expectation on here, there may be trouble ahead...........
