I did think she might be a decent bet for SPOTY, then thought Kane is bound to win. A quick Google reveals that Shearer didn't win in 96 and neither did Lineker in 86 so you never know.

If she can win double gold at the Olympics she's bound to win it. No pressure.I

It's a good year for everyone to work hard since there are no worlds or olympics.

Laura Muir currently leads the Diamond League women's 1500 list and Lorraine Ugen is top of the long jump. Asher-Smith is 5th in the 100m and 200m but hasn't competed at every event.

That Marathon record is seriously impressive, he didn't just beat it, he smashed it.

For the decathlon I honestly don't know what the record means in that context because it's so subjective.

Are all of those achievements really exactly the same difficulty?  I genuinely don't know but if you put the world records in each event into a calculator it suggests that the running events (110 hurdles and 400 in particular) are massively undervalued.

Some decathletes and heptathletes do compete in the individual disciplines from time to time - and occasionally do very well. But there is a trade-off as far as strength vs speed - but it is more about endurance in these events anyway - doing everything over two days. You can see it at the end of each day when they're all shattered doing the final runs.

I agree completely, so should better performance in the end of day events be worth more than the earlier ones and should day 2 be worth a little more, comparatively, than day 1.  As I say this is in no way undermining the achievement, it's purely pointing out that I'm not sure what the point of a 'world record' is in this instance.
