4-4-2 doesn't work with such a pedestrian midfield, if you're playing a decent side.

It's not about the formation really, it's that we hold to the shape rigidly.  If you're properly coached the formation is the defensive shape that you fall back into but with the ball you're trying to move out of it and create mismatches and overlaps.
