Wellington Road

Probably asking this too late now, even to our more senior members, but am just wondering if anyone here ever knew anyone who had attended a match at Wellington Road?

I could say the same as PWS but that would be a lie and Nigel Farage will hunt me down.

The story in our family is that my Grandad's Dad was a fan. My Grandad was born in 1902 so his Dad was certainly around in the 1890s. Whether he went to matches I don't know and sadly never will. Be nice to think so though.

On my mum's mum's side, a couple of her uncles played. Both had spells with Blues, one of them played for Fulham around 05 and one or other of them ended up a coach at Barcelona of all places. People on that side of the family definitely went but the uncles were too young to have lost there.

My grandfather was born in 1876 and I know that my old man was born in Manor Road Witton in 1919, the youngest in his family.  I know from the 1911 census that they were living there then and whilst I have no concrete evidence to the fact other than I know my grandfather liked the Villa,I would be pretty sure that he would have seen them play at Wellington Road, an easy walk from Witton.

Didn't your old man go there?

Knew a guy who was going around 1902 onwards. He told about being at the 1905 Cup Final and seeing Harry Hampton when we beat Newcastle. He lived long enough to come to the 71 League Cup final with us.

He certainly convinced me it was 1897 as part of his tricking me into supporting this bloody rabble.
