I think the layoff for that broken toe did for him; he didn't seem the same player after that.
The bloke was getting slower by the week. It speaks volumes of his desire and commitment to keep playing that he managed to look after himself well enough to drag his body through as much of the season as he did for us. Good luck to him, I hope his end comes gracefully, but we can probably find better use for a million-and-then-some quid next season.
