Couple of old scouse mates of mine went to Roma with Liverpool in '84, driving in a minibus full of lads from their local in Garston, a south Liverpool shithole. They said it was the worst game they've ever been to for trouble, Roma fans knifing anyone and everyone. At one point the Roma fans tried to overturn my mates' minibus - and would have succeeded if one of my mate's dads hadn't pulled a handgun from under his seat and started waving it at them.

OK I thought may be the demographics around the stadium evoked racial tension.

Fuck me when you're taking a hand gun to a football match I would suggest that you are in some ways looking for what you get!

The Roma hoolies specialised in the knife-in-the-buttocks back in the day. Super horrible, but very few deaths or anything. It was in Naples that the guns would come out.

When we played Juve at Villa Park back in 82? I seem to recall a couple of Villa fans were stabbed outside the ground

Like Chico i knew some Scousers who went to Rome in 1984 - plenty of knife attacks and also Scousers having their wallets pinched on buses, mainly by gypsy women they said.

The thing that infuriated them was that they were not involved in fights or arguments but instead young men would sneak up on them, stab them in the back and run off.

The blokes I knew reckoned some of their fellow supporters did not make the distinction between Roma and Juventus fans in Brussels a year later and were far more ready for trouble that horrible night.

Dark times. During the 90s I believe there was a decent-sized decline in violence related to Roma groups, but it's got worse again over the last decade.

Being careful what I say here - it doesn't defend what happened at Heysel in any way - but the seeds of the trouble there were sown (sowed?) in Rome

It'll be all-seater, which will be more geared to actual long term football watchers rather than your casual thug element.

It's a shit stadium, set in beautiful surroundings in a suburb of Rome that's an absolute twat to get to and from the city itself. The seats themselves are like plastic arse shaped buckets set in concrete uncomfortable as fuck and if its been raining full of water. I hope it rains.

Cool that you've got back from the future to tell us about Roma's new stadium. Niche but cool.

Edit: sorry that was bitchy to a completely unjustified degree!
