All managers make mistakes, in selection, game management and tactics.
It’s just that Bruce makes too many of them.

Any talk of sacking the manager makes no sense without also suggesting a replacement. If we can't think of a superior, or even suitable, replacement, then it is unlikely that the powers that be can either.

It is entirely possible that there is a dearth of  good managers out there and that is why the same names keep landing the plum jobs. I mean, who is out there that could be considered an improvement on the current manager and would realistically come here?

An improvement on what? A replacement is what is needed to what we have now - A manager who can keep a Championship side in the top half of the table with less players and money than Bruce has managed, so by this May, 7 team's managers will have that on their cv in the championship at least. We're not looking at the European elite here. Add in playing half decent football which would be an improvement on Bruce, but hardly setting the bar to guardiola standards

We've gone for the tried and tested approach this season.

Snoddy, John Terry, Glen Whelan, AEM. Grabban in January. All proven players at this level or above but all over or close to 30 so not the sorts we can build around for next 4-5 years.

It's clear SB has gone down this route as he knows this season is his one shot at getting us up. At other clubs he's signed plenty of younger players.

If we stay down FFP will negate that approach for next season so we will have to gamble on cheaper ones from lower divisions or abroad.

I don't think for that situation SB is a great fit as he's not a developer of players from what I've seen.

There are managers who improve players. Dean Smith has been at two clubs where player development is critical to how they run. Now I'm not saying he's the managerial answer to everything as he has weaknesses but he might actually be a decent fit in the summer as we've had two goes at trying to buy our way out of the division which hasn't been a great success so we could have a better chance perhaps with a more long term outlook and lower expectations.

it looks highly likely you will be involved in the play offs . if you did win the play offs i have a feeling that this forum would have a different view of SB . The championship is a very difficult league to get out of make no mistake .

Promotion or not, a change of manager is needed at the end of the season.

Probably the most fair and succinct appraisal of his tenure.

Good players with a good manager don't tend to find it very difficult. If we do go up via the play-offs i'll obviously be delighted and ultimately SB will have done what he was brought in to do, but i'll still think that overall we've under performed under him.

Depends. If Xia does have the finances and does intend to have a ground and side that will be challenging at the top end of Division 1 sooner rather than later is Steve Bruce the man to take us there? Whichever division we're in next season this squad will need a lot of work doing to it, if it's promotion I honestly can't say i'd want Bruce spending say £60m on new players. Harsh in many ways as he would have got us up but it's also how I feel.

I undestand that, but those that are haven't exactly been pulling up trees. And, maybe the reason for that is that the talent just isn't out there? It wouldn't help our cause one iota to sack SB and then hire SBII.

true but recently with his subs and formations he has become PL2

Not me ,with the resources he has had he should be either winning the league or be comfortably 2nd . Should he get us up via the plays off

If he gets us up he will no doubt be given some time in the PL but I doubt he will see out the season , lets not forget the last time he was in the PL he got relegated !

money isn't the answer to everything shinny .haha  . take a look at us we have proved you don't need millions to compete at the top end of the championship . warnock has put us together on a shoe string budget for example and yet we could still win the league  . we ain't pretty to watch like yourselves or wolves who play decent passing football but we are effective to what we do . route 1 with big and brash players who will die for the cause . i would love to see the reaction on here if warnock took over aston villa next season if he left us !!!! you would all be complaining about the style of football like west brom fans when pulis was in charge there that's for sure

I think he’s tactically limited, his recruitment is very similar to Martin O’Neill in that he goes for players he knows and trusts, his signings don’t capture the imagination.

If we were to achieve promotion, we would struggle regardless of who is the manager, I just think we would struggle a lot more with Bruce in charge, serving up more of he same and signing more of the same.

Is there any need for that?
