Surely Terry won't be here if we get promoted - didn't he say a big part of coming here was that, although he had offers from the PL, he did not want to play for anyone other than Chelsea in it?

The way I look at it is there are some players who look like they're too good for the Championship (increasingly the keeper, Chester, Grealish, Kodjia (probably), Snodgrass, Adomah) who are no-brainers to try to keep.

Then there are those who would be decent to have as a part of the squad.

That last point is the one we need to get right - the reason we got relegated was not because of those shit players being in the squad - it was because we relied upon them, and they started week in week out. That's another matter entirely.

Whoever is the manager, it will not be easy. Look at Newcastle's struggles this year. They're not in a relegation place but they are in a relegation battle. We need to try to avoid that, and maintain a bit of momentum.

If Bruce gets us up, play offs or automatic, I don't care, then he should absolutely get a shot at that.

You don't sack managers who have just got you promoted.

Agree with that last statement entirely. Id be confident he'd keep us up which would do for the first season. More confident than I was (still am to a lesser extent) about him getting us up.

The problem is that in those examples the years where he's got relegated (2 and he was taking Sunderland down just as much as Lambert was taking us down) they tend to be the ones where he's spent big money.

My biggest issue was always that if he got us promoted he'd probably not last out the first season and we'd be left finding someone to sort things out with a squad full of Bruce signings that would be tough to replace.  It's the same reason why we were fucked after MON because we had very few players who could play anything other than the style he'd gone with and far too many players towards the end of their career on big money.  We've fucked up 1 chance at establishing ourselves near the top by giving the wrong man too much rope and I don't want us to make the same mistake again.
If we don't get promoted this season I think Bruce be toast. If Bruce gets us promoted this season he will have earned the chance to have a crack at the premier league. No question. If we're top half of the premier league by Xmas he will be given a cash boost. If were hovering round the drop zone by Xmas the club will pull the trigger. That sums his situation up imho.

Sunderland were 16th when he left, so suggesting that they were "down" is just telling fibs.

And it wasn't his fault a bigger bully boy club came and snapped their best player up.

I’ve been as big a Bruxit supporter as anyone but if we do go up he should start the season with us. I don’t buy the O’Neill comparison - the players we’ve bought are all footballers rather than roid raging nightclub bouncers (I’m looking at you, James Collins).

Who knows, he may decide he's done what he came to do and move on. He probably knows that amongst some fans he'll never really be accepted or appreciated for various reasons.

He does have form for leaving clubs in the lurch but he won't do that to us because he knows he'll never work for a bigger club than Villa

With the exception of Johnstone, none of our current squad would get in a top 6 team so if we do go up were are unlikely to lose any of our better players.

I don't remember Bruce having big money to spend at the likes of Blose, Wigan, Hull or Slumberland to be honest.

It’s all relative to the era and financial capacity of the club but in around 2.5 seasons at Sunderland he spent £93m. And there is some serious naff in there. This isn’t his net spend of course as one of the players he sold was Bent to us for close to £20m.

£80.44 million recouped between 2009/10 and 2011/12, so he spent very little in total.

He then got them promoted again before jumping to join a bigger club.

I'm still all for showing him the door at the end of the season. Would we really want Bruce having £100M + to spend on players should we get promoted?  Could he attract them?  Would he know how to play them?

The results are improving he has also got a togetherness within the team/squad of late, that's good management by him.  Even so, as pleasing as that is the football is still not great really is it?

That's nothing. I once said (on the old Manila site) we won the league in 1982.

No being pissed and pinball as an excuse that time!
Why not? I've been on the piss since I was 15. And they had pinball in France too.
