Interesting she mentions the PL had moved on with more foreign coaches and had left Bruce behind.  It's beginning to look as if the Championship has done likewise.

Spot on. At some point as a club we need to get ingrained in us a technically sophisticated game. Not just because its embrassing seeing us hoof and hope but because its increasingly a matter of survival. If we were by a miracle get promoted with Bruce's style we would come straight back down as we would be torn apart by more tehcnical managers in the Premier League.

And the wally with the brolly has left his post to pursue other options,OMFG no.
Fookin hell nooooooo

Steve Round's best mate. Gave him his first coaching job at Boro.

Oh Jesus no. McClaren could really finish us off.

Looks more likely to be Sheff Weds (hopefully).

Yes, thinking just the same. There was a time when Bruce was a decent manager and there was a time when a championship promotion specialist was a valid approach. We’re doubly behind the curve.

If Tone needs a comparison, Monk got the elbow for not being good enough with Boro in a similar position to us (now above us) and  after only being given half a season.  Mind you if Pulis were the alternative I'd rather keep what we've got.

Has he admitted that he doesn't do tactics? Surely the way we are set-up with cutting-in wingers and a "big number 9 that I always associate Villa with" are tactics, albeit of the type that have aged more than the weeds growing at Plough Lane.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2011/nov/30/steve-bruce-sunderland-sacked

Quote
Shortly after taking charge at Sunderland Steve Bruce was asked if he had considered experimenting with a Christmas Tree formation. "I'm not really into tactics," he replied. At the time that response was easy to interpret as a deliberately flippant or, perhaps, a self-deprecating means of avoiding answering the question. As the seasons passed, though, the suspicion grew that the former Manchester United captain had simply been honest.

There's probably videos of it on youtube as well.

Just re-read that article.

I read it a while back and remembered the I don't do tactics line but there's plenty of other relevant stuff in there, not reacting to rival managers changing formations during games, signing 30 players during his two and a half years there and moving some of them on very quickly as they barely played, lack of creativity in central midfield so Sunderland couldn't control games and then blaming fans just before he was sacked for inflated expectations, all sounds a little familiar to me!

Staggered to read at the end that apparently he didn't realise Elmohamady would be observing Ramadan during the season when he signed him. Really don't think attention to detail is SB's strong point. He signs Hogan because he scores 20 goals but dosen't scout how he actually scores those goals would be maybe another example of this.

Regarding that article Steve Bruce being appointed in the PL was a nailed on disaster. If there was a board arguably worse than the one we had it was that lot. Appointing him in the Championship came with a lot less risk and should have come with more certainty.

He'd actually done a decent job at Wigan when Sunderland appointed him. Same as he did a pretty good job at Hull when we appointed him.

He's better suited to underdog clubs imo with little money to spend.

He's out of his depth when expectations increase and he gets more of a transfer kitty. His time at SHA tells you that. Did very well first couple of years getting them up and keeping them up. As soon as he got the funds to sign Heskey, Gronkjaer, Melchiot etc they got relegated.

So, to summarise, he’s a manager who doesn’t coach, doesn’t do tactics and is terrible in the transfer market.

His contacts in the game mean he gets the odd one right, Johnstone and Onomah are quality players. Valencia and Palacious before then, think Wenger recommended them to him. Give him money though, and the same for Pulis, MON etc,  scattergun signings of "characters" are his speciality. 5 right backs, 1 left back. He did something similar at Sunderland.

It's a shocking indictment of Wynness, Round et al that Bruce's excesses in the transfer market haven't been reigned in.

Didn't do MON any harm. ;)

SB is generally cut from the same cloth but he dosen't have the charisma of MON, isn't as good at getting players to fit into the gameplan and our status as a club is severely reduced from what it was.

Back in 2006 we were still a premier league club who could go places with the right backing so good players still wanted to join us. Long way from that now.

“ I’m not really into tactics”

I was amazed when I first read that, it’s still so obviously true.

The article could basically be copied and pasted (with a few name changes here and there) and it would accurately sum up his time Villa Park.

His signings that one summer were astonishingly bad. I think he brought in something 12 players and paid at the time something ridiculous for Connon Wickham.

I am more convinced by every passing minute that he should be sacked. I get more angry about our position the more I think about it.

That's true, the only time in my lifetime they had better players than us and they went down.
