Yes, Lee that also but for me mainly a lack of finesse.  A clunking, wellying, run-through-brick-walls approach to the game that is long past its sell by date.

Erm, Cardiff are second and 9 points ahead of us with a "dinosaur" playing that exact way, just with a tad more pace out wide and significantly mote snidey elbows.

People call Warnock a dinosaur because he's been around the block, is an unpleasant individual and has never done it at the top level. What can't be denied about him though is virtually every job he's had, he's found a way to get results. I think this is the footballing intuition and intelligence Brian's referring to.

As I said above in an earlier post, several clubs are doing it in different ways: (i) Wolves will reach the "Promised Land" because they hired a decent manager who knew how to exploit the resources available to him; (ii) Cardiff will be in the mix because (like it or not) their manager is a street fighter who knows how to grind out results; (iii) Derby has blended the classic youth ticket with experienced former 'Premers', at a price that does not burden them with debt; and, (iv) Fulham will be influential because they tapped into their youth system and trusted the talent to deliver.
We seem to be trying a hybrid of three of these and failing - our team seems ponderous, unfit and unmotivated. all of which points to ineptitude on the part of the manager and his coaching team.

Warnock does play that way, but he has them organised in a way that means it is effective.  Although it is not good to watch, long ball football can be effective if a team is set up to play that way.  The problem is that we play that way with a team that isn't really suited to it and it invariably ends up in a horribly disjointed mess.

21.1.17-Villa take a 2-0 vs Preston and end up drawing 2-2.
23.12.17 Villa take a 2-0 vs Sheffield Utd and end up drawing 2-2.
In 11 months what has Bruce done to move this club forwards and ensure we don't keep making the same mistakes? How has the coaching improved us as a team? 13 points lost at home this ssn is simply not good enough. Sadly I suspect Bruce is going nowhere. He stabilised us as a club, when we could easily have slipped through the divisions. That is all he has done. He offered little re the playoffs last ssn, he's had 2 transfer windows and a close season and still only managed 6 points from the opening 6 games. We've been playing catch up ever since with no real hope of ever doing so, because we don't learn from our mistakes, we are not forward thinking, we pick players on past reputations and not current form (eg Snoddy), we play players in the wrong positions and not to their strengths...the list could go on sadly.

He has three shortcomings.  All three have the prefix 'in'.   He lacks football intuition.  The innate sense all good managers have to anticipate what happens next before the opposition.  He is defensive and dour by inclination.  He regards not losing as important as winning.  Despite victory yielding three times more points.  And he lacks intelligence.  Dave Bassett Football Manager is buried in the same grave as Dixon of Dock Green and Ena Sharpies.  A successful modern manager has to be bright and sharp and clever.  See 'intuition' and 'inclination'.   Steve Bruce is not the answer to our decline.

Totally agree plus I would add he lacks inspiration.

Inability to beat the other top 7 sides.

Garry Monk has just been (correctly) sacked for a record of only 10 wins in 23.

I'm surprised about that to be honest.

Carvahal booted at Wednesday now too. Two clubs whose boards expect promotion and see their teams as under- performing. I just can't see likeable old Steve Bruce and the respect he commands, being scrutinised to the same degree by Wyness and Co.
While we cling on to the play-offs or even fall out of them over Christmas, Bruce, despite the shite football he presides over, will just about have enough credit to see him avoid any consequences. And the Agnew appointment just strengthens his stay of execution.
