re DLBIA, my twopenn'th, FWIW is: I am angry, angry for what has happened to our club over the last six years or so.  It should never have happened; something I think we all agree on.  Mistake upon mistake being made on top of a disinterested owner unwilling to invest further.  I accept that the owner wanted out and it took longer than he and us wanted it to but, believe me, I'm still friggin' angry, whether we sing about it or not.

Totally agree. I hate Lerner for what he did to basically ruin the club. I hope his fortune is dwindling, but probably not....

According to Kodjia on Twitter, he let Gestede take the penalty to basically keep his pecker up, which bodes well for team spirit.

Despite it happening right below me I didn't see what actually happened at the end of the first half when their player was seemingly out for the count and a Melee ensued, anyone help?

Just caught an angle of this from a fans video on YT.  They play the ball out, Jedinak gets to it first and plays it back to our keeper.  Their player and Baker also go for the ball, Baker appears to check him in a similar way that their defender did with Amavi in the lead up to our first goal.  Obviously being checked by Baker is not a prospect to be relished and their player ends up poleaxed.

Like you, I missed this in real time but from the angle I've just seen, the player does seem to be taken out.  The ref was a lot closer though and it didn't look like their player was going to get near the ball.

Grealish good, Adomah excellent, Kodjia even better... Aston Villa's forwards show what Cardiff City must do come January

11th in the table, fifth favourites to go up.

The bookies rarely get it wrong and it isn’t difficult to work out why they believe Aston Villa sit in a false position.

It is because like Cardiff, they made a swift appointment and clearly the right one.

Like Cardiff, they erred in the summer and as the early stages of the season progressed, they were getting further and further away from winning games.

Steve Bruce is a manager who knows this division supremely well, has been promoted a number of times and gets the best out of players. He is also, in this division at least, a man whose tactical nous doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

Like Warnock, the sense of ‘right man, right time’ was overwhelming.

Yet there is another reason why Villa are being so heavily backed to surge for the play-offs, and it isn’t just their unbeaten run.

It is in a forward line with remarkable variety and quality, able to withstand injuries and African Cup of Nations call-ups. It cost a fortune, but is starting to deliver points with regularity.

Bruce has already tightened the ship at the back and has built a back six who are happy to move the ball quickly into the forward areas, where they have speed to counter and more than enough technical ability to pass, move and open teams up.

It’s why they are a smart bet for promotion, and Cardiff remain one of the favourites for the drop.

Cardiff are getting better in that department, no doubt. Junior Hoilett has been a revelation in the last two weeks and having had the time to reflect on what was at times a frenetic encounter, his performance stands out as even more impressive.

There were some robust challenges flying in his direction early on, Aston Villa clearly having witnessed what he did to Huddersfield last weekend.

Hoilett was unbowed and it was tenacity in the challenge, never really talked about as a strong part of his game, that caught out Villa and lead to the equaliser.

Again, he drifted across the front line, delivering some excellent deliveries from his favoured right-hand side and even going close with a couple of headers.

Alongside Rickie Lambert, who is getting sharper and bringing Hoilett into the game, they have a good partnership that will serve them well. That is particularly important when the lesser teams come to the Cardiff City Stadium and sit deep.

For the most part, Cardiff matched Villa, as lively and bright going forward as their hosts. Yet the final half an hour was telling, even if the Bluebirds shortcomings were exacerbated by Lee Peltier’s sending off.

Once Lambert tires, Cardiff do not have much that they change in the forward areas, creativity and speed so clearly lacking.

Craig Noone came on for Anthony Pilkington yesterday and his qualities are well known, and it’s important at this point to say that when came on against Nottingham Forest he was superb and immediately forced a goal.

The other attacking substitution saw Frederic Gounongbe came on for Lambert. He had a good chance, a free header no less, but the clinical finishing that he is said to have brought to training is still not translating onto the pitch.

Marouane Chamakh was not on the bench and neither was Lex Immers, whose combination of excellent positional awareness and hard running between the lines saved Cardiff from a similar predicament last season.

Compare that to Villa.

They started with a trident of Adomah-Kodjia-Ayew, with Grealish playing in the gaps left behind.

Kodjia was excellent. In the early stages he pulled off Sean Morrison’s shoulder over and over again, getting the centre-halves back pedalling. As the game developed he began to sit deeper and moved into the wide areas, springing as he did for his goal.

Then in the final stages, a simply sumptuous pass from just inside the Cardiff half to release Grealish for the penalty incident.

Ayew was a peripheral figure but Adomah was excellent and rewarded for his discipline in staying tight to the right-hand side. One goal, one assist, a very good day at the office for a winger.

They were good, but it was the changes Bruce was able to make that settled the contest.

Gabby Agbonlahor, fresh from his ‘mini pre-season’, was a nightmare on the break as Cardiff threw bodies forward. Rudy Gestede was an outlet while Jack Grealish enjoyed himself when moved out to the left, preying on Pilkington and Peltier’s tiredness, the pair kept busy all afternoon by Jordan Amavi’s runs from deep.

It’s what Warnock has said ever since his arrival, needing to strengthen in key areas of the first XI but also to get options to change the game late on. Ross McCormack, remarkably, was injured for the hosts and yet the absence of arguably the best striker in this league over the last few seasons barely even registered.

It’s the reason why Aston Villa, bolstered by the cold hard cash thrown at the squad in the summer, are confident that Steve Bruce’s instant impact can continue long into the winter. For Cardiff, more patience is required.

Last week we outplayed a team with a reputation for a good footballing side, this week we stood up to a cynical, over physical side and won the game. I think that shows the Bruce impact on the squad. Warnock is a dinosaur and a better ref would have stopped them by using his cards sooner but I got the impression that he just couldn't be arsed blowing up for half the fouls as it created work for him. You get a measure of their manager when your read that he waited for Grealish in the tunnel to confront him as though it was his own fault that they kept fouling him. This was about 5 minutes after everyone else had gone off as he had come over to the Holte, along with Gollini, to give his shirt to somebody in the crowd. He probably then laid into his own players for not kicking him hard enough. Wanker.

Gabby and Gestede for all their limitations did make a difference when they came on which again reflects well on Bruce because they didn't seem obvious changes to me.

As for Oasis at the end, if the club had asked fans for ideas of what song to play it would have been number 7,296 on the list. As it is, it happened spontaneously and now just seems to work, probably because, unlike the Twang song suggested above, everyone knows the words so can join in if they want. Not looking back in anger seems to me an appropriate approach for a club trying to shake of the effect of 5 years of neglect.

This.

About the Oasis song. Who wrote it, what team they support, what city they're from and whether they're shit or not is all irrelevant. The words 'don't look back in anger' are very apposite given the pitiful state L****r got us into. It was spontaneous. And it is very in-keeping with the understated irony and wit of Villa fans (remember Always Look On The Bright Side of Life?). We're moving forward now, and we're putting all that rubbish behind us without any bitterness.

If anyone can find a song by a Villa supporting Brummie band with a chorus that goes 'don't look back in anger', maybe we can try that one after the next win. Until then...

Missed my 'The Twang' post Jimbo? Villa supporting Brummie band with a chorus that goes "I feel so much better today, I chase the bad things away". The whole song fits much better than Oasis, although isn't as well known. It's chock full of Brummie accents, and the chorus makes an easily repeated terrace chant:

Help...during the second half, Kodjia was in possession and heading towards goal, when he stopped, after being kicked I think, and cupped his hands round his mouth. The opponent looked at him and then Kodjia skipped off again with the ball with a bemused defender still immobile. Can anyone enlighten me with details as from my seat at the back of the Holte it was a little unclear

The defender caught Kodjia in the mouth with his hand as he swung round. It was a strange moment as I think they both thought the ref was going to blow the whistle .....

3 league wins on the trot at home.

I stand to be corrected but it appears the last time this happened was Sept/Oct 2007.

Sorry, Risso, missed your post. It's a far better song than DLBIA, no doubt, but not as many people know it and it wasn't taken up spontaneously. Spontaneity is everything on English terraces, as a hundred failed attempts at contriving club 'anthems' demonstrate. Remember that awful dirge of a song a couple of seasons ago? Aston Villa That's Who. That was a proper toe-curler.

Anyway, aren't there some noses in The Twang?

I've been at work all weekend so haven't had time to look at every thread.
Anyway, even if I did have time I wouldn't on principle look at threads about a spudheaded bluenose reject just because he's the best manager we've had in a long while who is going to get us back in the Premier League at the first attempt.
