Who was our last player to win that award?
I don't think they had a player of the month comp the last time we were in the 2nd Division!

Hah.

Surprisingly, more recently than you'd think - Benteke's decent spell under Sherwood got him player of the month.

Before that, Ashley Young back in 2008 (he won it three times out of six consecutive selections that year, which my hazy memory remembers as being some sort of record). I'm surprised that great spell Milner had under O'Neill, didn't get it.

Back to Ashley Young - our 23 (?) years in the Premiership / Premier League, we've had nine Player Of The Month awards, and those three months for Young in 2008 account for a third of them.

While I'm on the Wikipedia page, the "huh?" ones that jumped out.

Adam Le Fondre Premier League Player Of The Month in 2013?

Peter Odenwingie twice in a year at West Brom? He was probably their best striker of recent times, but you don't see Mickael Forssell getting huge accolades for his time at Birmingham (apart from March 2004).

I also wonder what Anton Ferdinand did in 2006 to be the best player that month.

Especially when you consider Milner went on to win Young Player of the Year in 2009-10

In fairness, I'd say Milner's greatest strengths are his consistency and work ethic. Not spectacular attributes likely to stand out over the short period of a month, but the sort of skills which impress over a longer duration, like a season.

I had to Google Mickey Evans, a striker with 4 goals in 22 games for Southampton and he managed to win one.

Le fondre got 5 in 3 as a sub in each game, think it was about 75 minutes of actual playtime.

Dont care about the award but I like this lad. Starting to think we have a real class player on our hands.

Looks like we've found a gem. Its been a great start to his Villa career, hope he continues to be a goal threat.
Hope he's popping champagne come the end of the season

What a display today. He was all over the pitch, kicked & pulled. Some bad decisions against him and a missed penalty, that's character. 10/10

Bad penalty but impressed that he didn't let it affect him. Going to be a big loss when he goes to the ACN as no other striker looks like scoring.

We will need to find a different way to play and other players will need to pitch in.

Think he's great for us I'd just like to see him vary his penalty taking as I think he goes for the same side every time.
