With Ayew, that's three penalty takers.

Bacuna never missed one for Groningen and, despite his miss earlier this season, McCormack has a good penalty record.

We have a good few options there.

That could come in very handy in, say, a play-off final. Course, if it does I won't know anything about it because I'll have died of a stress-related heart attack towards the end of extra time.

Include Jedinak. He is the penalty taker for Australia.

We do seem to have a lot of very confident penalty takers, I'd trust Adomah, Amavi and Gardner as well and I seem to recall Grealish slotting a few at U18/U23 level.

He didn't miss, so his decision was justified.

Not it wasn't. When Ormondroyd had score 2 against coventry 20 odd years ago, Platt the recognised penalty taker still took the spot kick and denied Ormondroyd his hat-trick. We should be professional at all times and just because he scored doesn't make the decision the right one. I want us to be ruthless. Not mates.

I want us to be a team, because a team ethic before the individual is more professional and will get us further. It was the right decision.

I think the end justified the means even if I was grimacing ever so slightly at the news that Rudy was stepping up to take it.

Whatever works for the team is fine by me.

I don't care who takes them, as long as they score.

If the score had been 3-1 I'd be agreeing with you.

However, at 2-1 and with Villa's record this season of conceding late goals, I want to see the best penalty taker available stepping up.

It wasn't Garett Southgate taking the penalty. Clearly from the way he put it away he is competent penalty taker. There's no issue here.

I'll agree that Rudy did take it well

He did. That's not the point though. Well, not for me, anyhow.

What is your point?

A good penalty taker took a penalty instead of another good penalty taker?

With penalties, there's an element of chance involved, so not sure how you can define one player as being the "best" when they all have similar records from the spot.  Kodija could quite easily have had his kick saved, who knows.

I think if Gestede in our minds was already perceived to be a good penalty taker then this wouldn't be as much of a conversation. We should now be confident that he is. Had Kodjia given that penalty for example to Jedinak, who is an established penalty taker, then would this be any kind of issue?

I think he's only missed one penalty in his career - for Cardiff, in the League Cup final against Liverpool.
