Rotherham & Huddersfield
« on: August 12, 2016, 11:51:33 AM »
With the next two home games being against Rotherham & Huddersfield, got me thinking about the last time we played these two teams.

Off the top of my head, I seem to remember losing at home 1-2 to Rotherham in the 1971-72 3rd Division winning season and beating Huddersfield 2-0 early in the 1972-73 season in the 2nd division.

Can anyone recall playing either or both of these teams since then ?

Huddersfield in 87/88, 1-0 away 1-1 at home.  Rotherham 13/14 in the LC, won 3-0 at home.

You're correct ref Rotherham, incidentally we won 2-0 away. Huddersfield a 1-1 draw in 87 we also won away at Huddersfield that season with a goal
from David Hunt who came on to replace that Villa great Neale Cooper.....obviously got injured again

Thanks PWS - I don't recall any of those games - I'm definitely getting old - if it was 40 or more years ago, I remember it - if it was yesterday, I'd have no chance.

As I remember, Rotherham was one of only two games we lost at home in 1971-72 - the other being Mansfield - who I think beat us at home both years we were in the 3rd division.

Think it was Steve Hunt that scored the winner at Huddersfield.

I was at that game - at Leeds Road. About 6,000 there (3,000 Villa fans) in a ground that used to hold about 50,000. They had an enourmous terrace along one side of the ground.

There was a bomb scare during the Huddersfield game at Villa Park. Someone phoned in a bomb warning and there was an announcement over the tannoy that the exits were open and anyone who wanted to leave could do so. In retrospect it was a missed opportunity to escape a pretty rubbish match. I think one of the newspaper reports the next day commented that it was the closest there came to being any fireworks.

First ever sending off I saw was a Huddersfield player, Jimmy McGill at VP in 1967. This was in the days when just to get booked needed some fairly voilent play.
1967/68 we beat Rotherham at home at the start of the season but they came back in the new year and knocked us out of the 4th round of the Cup. Rotherham had a player called John Quinn, so of course their fans were singing Manfred Manns Mighty Quinn throughout.
From memory, the league game drew a crowd of under 15,000 but there were over 30,000 for the cup game - it would be the other way round now.

Rotherham were our first home opponents after relegation in 1967. We won 3-1, goals from Anderson, Rudge and Stobart.

I remember the reality of getting relegated by the crowd (13,000) and the fact it was Rotherham. Didn't think for a second things would get so much worse before they got better.

IIRC the 1-1 draw at VP was the week after Huddersfield had been hammered 10-1 by Manchester City. The draw was extremely disappointing. As was our home form in general. It was the results away that kept us up there.

I was only nine years old at the time but remember the Huddersfield game at VP in 67/68 season. It finished 0-0 and Willie Anderson nearly had his shirt ripped off by their full back.
I also remember how gutted I was when we lost to Rotherham in that FA Cup tie. It still hurts today.

Our best performance during the 1969-70 season in the old second division was a 4-1 home win against Huddersfield, if I recall correctly played at night.  At the end of that season, we were relegated to the third division and Huddersfield were promoted to the first as champions.

I don't think I have ever seen us play Rotherham but I was at the away game at Huddersfield early on in the '87-'88 promotion season and it was the wettest I have ever got at a game. I think it was Steve Hunt who got the goal. I don't recall David Hunt ever scoring for us.
