Penalties is no way to settle a game that defines a whole season.  If the semi final or final is level after extra time, the aggregate scores from the two league  games during the season should settle it.  That way, no poor sod has to carry the responsibility for the whole team and extra time would be more interesting as one team may really have to go for it.

What if both league games were 1-1 draws?

Also the team that 'wins' on the basis of the League games would just park the bus and play for a draw in the playoffs.

I don't particularly blame teams for resting players. Especially someone like Huddersfield that have no squad depth. Look what happened to Kod, imagine that happening when we were sat 4th and playing what for us was a meaningless game as we were guaranteed playoffs and no chance of automatic promotion. It's not ideal for the rest of the league but with around £100m at stake, and in the case of Huddersfield a first chance in over 40 years of getting into the top flight, I can understand why they do it.

I blame them. They kept Small Heath up. ******.

Am I right in thinking last time they survived on the last day it was because somebody else had a match abandoned when they were winning comfortably? They're jammy ******.

Here's a radical idea - how about the teams that finish first, second and third go up. You know, like what used to happen.  Fucking playoff bollocks! Only there to fleece the fans to help pay for Wembley!  >:(

Why do they have them in loads of countries that don't have a Wembley, then?

To add a bit more intrigue to the last four months of the season. It was only around six matches before the end of the season that the last few accepted that the playoffs were out of the question and we've been terrible. Imagine how excruciatingly dull it would have been it we had known it was third or nothing.

It means than anyone from sixth through to around fourteenth has a reason to turn up from New Year onwards.

Let's make it simple.  After the season ends, re arrange the teams in the league into alphabetical order.   Top two only to go up.  At least try it for next season and scrap it the year after if people aren't happy?

Don't watch much league 2 football but the Luton Blackpool game was a belter.  Can't beat the play offs for tension.

Two brilliant ties. Happy to see scummy Luton out.

Who wanted to get rid of the playoffs?

22 goals across the two legs and dying seconds winners. Wow.

In Liga Pro in Italy there is a 27 team play off for 1 promotion place to Serie B. God knows how it works, I tried to work it out and failed miserably.

It's actually 28...

Lega Pro consists of three divisions. Four Lega Pro teams are promoted to Serie B.

The three division winners are promoted automatically.

Teams placed 2nd-10th in each division qualify for the playoffs, along with the winner of the Coppa Italia Lega Pro (their version of the Windscreen Shield). If the Coppa Italia Lega Pro winners finish between 2nd and 10th in their division, the 11th placed team in their division also qualify for the playoffs. If the Coppa Italia Lega Pro winners finish 1st in their division, then the Coppa runners-up take their place in the playoffs. The article doesn't say what happens if both the winner and runner-up of the Coppa finish 1st in their divisions.

Anyway, moving on...

The three 2nd place teams and the Coppa winners go straight to the Second Round of the playoffs. The remaining 24 teams playoff in the First Round.

The twelve First Round winners join the four teams who received a bye in the Second Round, which comprises of sixteen teams.

From this point on, it's straight knockout.

There, what could be simpler?
