It is a fantastic record by Keane. To be fair to Rooney though ( just this once), he's scored 53 goals but "only" has 115 caps, that's 30-odd fewer games than Keane. They have exactly the same strike rate.

You would expect an England player to score more though, they're generally a better side and so higher seeds meaning they're likely to play more matches against poor sides.

Although I suppose they also attract higher calibre friendly opposition to counter that, a little bit.

Most of Keane's goals are against crap teams. They all count and he's had a great career but he hasn't scored many against top sides, maybe half a dozen or so.

I think the fact that he's not exactly been blessed with superstar talent around him that not only has he punched well above his weight at international level but really so has the international side he plays for. If crap teams was a barometer to measure success most of Rooney's goals are against naff too. In fact you could probably say that about any forward that plays for one of the top nations because it isn't that often they play against the best relative to how many games take place against much weaker sides, especially during qualification for major events.

That is a strange one.  They blamed the loss of three finals on him, he retires.  They then beg him to come back, build a statue of him, so he comes back.  Then when he's back they accuse him of deceiving the Argentine public.  Make your mind up lads.

Also, England generally have a lot more strength in depth than Ireland, so any half decent player for the Irish is guaranteed to play every game, and for a lot longer.

Rooney has pretty much been a flat track bully though, scoring goals until it actually matters in major finals.
