I'd clap a decent player who scored a hat-trick against us, and I've clapped individual goals before too.

I couldn't bring myself to clap that cheating animal Scholes who shouldn't even have been on the pitch.

Didn't our fans applaud Lampard when he broke the club's scoring record at Villa Park a couple of seasons back?

I remember that game I stood on the trinity terrace ,and I know it's fifty years ago no subs I'm sure he was injured, when he scored his fifth.  I don't remember applause on all sides of the ground though.

I was at that match and, the bastard was definitely near the touch line injured about to go off when the ball came to him and he ran like a scalded cat and scored.  There was certainly no applause from our supporters that I recall, and I have been known to applaud the opposition on more than one occasion.

Shows what a great defence we had back then when limp-along-Leslie (ask yer Dad) was able to outstrip them and score.  Sound familiar?

I wasn't at the match but Bluenose buddies of mine insist a large section Villa applauded Trevor Francis

when scored a hat trick against for QPR. Sounds unlikely to me.

Does anyone of the older generation of Villa remember this match? It was notable because Bobby Tambling scored five goals for Chelsea but the most memorable thing for me was the standing ovation Tambling received at the end of the from from virtually every Villa fan in the ground. If this happened these days I doubt very much if a visiting player would get such a reaction from the present generation of Villa (or any other fans for that matter)

Times have changed and not necessarily for the better.

I was there and as hacked off as it's possible to be. I didn't applaud Tambling, neither do I remember anyone else doing so (though I admit to standing).

I was there too and cannot remember this happening at all. Tambling destroyed Charlie Aitken and Villa that day. We were awful.

I was there and I certainly don't recall it.  In fact I was running back up the half empty Holte to avoid the pissing rain when his third went in.

People were so taken with his performance they threw coins to show their appreciation.

Maybe I imagined it all.

But I didn't.

The applause wasn't unainmous but several thousand Villa applauded Tambling off the pitch.

Sure many had long since left.

I have a strange (real or imagined?) recollection of the Holte End singing Pat Jennings name in a midweek game after we had won the League Cup in 1977. I think we won 2-1 and Spurs were on their way down, so we could afford to be magnanimous.

Re Francis I'm only stating what I heard from Blues fans. As I said I was highly dubious.
