Working backwards and covering the last 11 years, the points needed to finish second are 87, 86, 78, 87, 81, 80, 81, 76, 85, 82, 86.

Just to be clear, that's not the points the second placed teams necessarily finished on, but what was needed to finish 1 point above 3rd place.

How many do you need to get out of it?

24 or 25 by my reckoning.

Have we won that many games in the last three seasons?

Bloody hell, I thought you might have been kidding. But the answer is no. So we have to win more games next season than we have the past three combined.

We haven't won that many home games in the last five...!

Assuming we don't win again this season, it will be 23 league wins over the last 3 seasons.

How is this for some 'fun' facts.

Last time we won more than 10 league games in a season was 10/11 under Houllier.
Last time we won 10 home games was 2007/08 when we won 10.
Last time we won more than 10 homes games, 02/03 under SGTII. We won 11.

We've won around a total of 40 league games since Houllier left and that was in Jun 2011.

Us winning 25/26 games next season even in a lower league is kind of hard to imagine actually happening.

The home form has been woeful for years. We're too nice and soft a side to play at something like Villa Park, which motivates the opposition with its history and opulence.

Not many unless we fire sale most of the squad and get a winning hard core manager in.  A good start is essential.  Big VP crowds and massive away following.

I'll stick my neck out and say more than this season. Maybe.

We haven't been in the second division for 28 years so no point in looking at what we did in the last 5.

We will probably need 25 wins to make the playoff.

27-28 wins to finish top 2.

We will probably need 22-25 wins to make the playoff.

26-28 wins to finish top 2.
