Although you could have had

I'm a loser
I'm down
I'm going to sit right down and cry (over you)
It's all too much
While Paul McGrath gently weeps

And I'm not certain the Beatles were Scottish, or prolific between 1980-99.

There used to be a football quiz on TV called Quiz Ball (I think). There were two teams of footballers and they could select to go the short route to goal with one hard question or the long route by passing with up to four easier questions. If one team was our players, we would have to for the one question shot as we couldn't string passes together.

Quiz Machines in pubs still have games that are a variation on what you are describing.
