1996 League Cup final
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:13:24 PM »
Probably been done before but I was thinking of the 1996 League cup final against Leeds which I attended with my brother when I was 15. I always loved Savo but he got a lot of stick and I remember being so pleased for him when he scored that screamer! We had a crazy painted lady sitting directly behind us and she kept spilling her drink on us when we were attacking :-)

I was in Bosnia for this one, we had a few soldiers from one of the Yorkshire Regiments in the same place at the time so I made a lot of money in bets.
Never in doubt.

As soon as I saw the Leeds team sheet I knew we had it won.

Had such a good team then playing at the maximum of there abilities.

Shame 4th place didnt get you Champions League then, we never had any luck chasing that tournament, never gonna happen now.

The only time we've ever acted like we belonged there.

Missed savos goal as was in the little boys room at Wembley courtesy of the previous 5 hours drinking in st Joseph's Irish club just off Wembley way.
The rendition of the dwight Yorke song after he scored was Awesome

My abiding memory of that game apart from the faultless display by the team was a single middle-aged and obviously disappointed Leeds fan applauding Villa fans on coaches as they pulled away.

It really did feel like we belonged there.

My foggy memories:-
- Nasty memories of Leeds fans but that day it seemed good-natured. "Super Tommy Johnson" and NOT "Super Tony Yeboah"
- I'm afraid I was very drunk but met Carl Chinn in one of those upper bogs. He was f*cking sh*tfaced.
- "Savo scored at Wembley" chants
- Buglers in the Villa end every time we attacked
- Best Villa banner ever seen - "Mark Draper lays on more balls than Pamela Anderson"

Happy days...and more to come, hopefully.

Combination of the few sneeky beers I had (I was 15 at the time), and the fact that we totally battered Leeds, might just rank it above 94. Both amazing days out though, and very little to choose between them.

We were sat in the Olympic Gallery right at the top, just before the Half Way Line. God knows how my dad managed to get those tickets.
As soon as Savo shot I knew it had gone in. The stand was so rickerty, you had the sensation that if you jumped up and down you'd go straight through it.
Didn't stop us going banana's for Taylor and Dwight's goal. I was certain when we left the ground that we'd be back on many more occasions.

Great stories guys, we had a good team and were qualifying for European competitions. It just show what can be done in a short period of time if you think about it, the team that won the same cup in 1994 was all but gone but we remained a force. Over the last decade or so we have been in slow but consistent decline!

The only time we've ever acted like we belonged there.

Unlike 1994 when we were the biggest daytrippers you've ever seen!

I was on a flight moving to Spain. Never knew the scores until we landed.

My new boss was waiting for me with a massive grin at Ibiza Airport and I knew that we had stayed up!

Great Day as we Smote the Finest and Ugliest from God's Own County.

Sent Them Packing. Miserable ungracious fuckers.

Taylor scoring 2 years after attending as a fan. Brilliant.
