Dean Saunders home debut - full MOTD highlights
« on: November 18, 2015, 03:15:39 PM »

One of the seminal games in my Villa supporting career. Was sat North Stand Upper so had great view of Rosenthal hitting underside of bar down the other end. Atmosphere was amazing and it was helped by the noisy away support on top of a jubilant home crowd. Garry Parker was international class that day.

I remember saying at the time "it must've been easier for him to score"

Will watch this when I get home tonight.  Apart from the last couple of months, what a season that was.  One of the last seasons of 'proper football' before Sky got a real hold on the game.  I can still name the starting XI for most of that season:

                           Spink

Barrett         McGrath     Teale    Staunton

Houghton    Richardson   Parker     Froggatt

                  Atkinson        Saunders

Of course there were the odd changes here and there.  Thinking back, I don't remember Tony Daley featuring that much that season.  Guess he must have been injured.

It was a tremendous season, even though we didn't actually win anything it is one of my favourite seasons ever.

I remember Big Ron saying towards the end when it looked like Man U. would pip us to the league title "whatever happens, this crowd has seen some superb football this season" - again what a pity we couldn't quite push-on from finishing 2nd.

I remember going to see his debut at Leeds the week before. Nil Nil? Sunday game?

1-1. He had a goal disallowed for offside. Parker scored ours, Steve Hodge for them.

Does it show the whole of Holte auditioning for a coffee advert?

I was in the Holte Lower right and could see the cross bar but the flight of the ball was blocked by some tall buggers just after Rosenthal beat Spink. It felt like hours from leaving his foot to seeing it smack the cross bar because of that blocked view.

So many great things about this game and team.
But not least, the fact that we weren't pushovers at home, to anybody.

This is the game which I probably remember most of all, in the lower Holte, on my 18th birthday, just about to start Uni

I think that happened twice in that game. For Rosenthal hitting the bar and earlier on when Walters deliberately celebrated his goal in front if us.

The thing I remember most vividly about this game is two geezers sat just in front us, about 5 rows back from the dugouts, singing "Gringo Moustachio" relentlessly at Bruce Grobbelaar on their bench.

Daley did his cruciate very early on in the season.  He was my favourite player at the time so remember that vividly.

My season ticket was in the Witton Lane Stand that season.  The last year it was the single tier stand.  Used to bloody love sitting there. We had a fantastic group of lads sat with us.
I was only 8 that season, and there was a bloke called H who sat nearby - just around the half way line.  Gave me £1 every home game.
He used to shout "I don't like it Willa (with his false teeth) You've gotta move".  Brings a tear to my eye.
