Newcastle still look shit but the talk of them being fucked if they go down is not true really. They've been making large profits in their accounts and had £34m cash in the bank. They could afford to take the gamble that we couldn't.

That changes quickly if you get relegated though, like most teams they can absorb the first season easily enough but if you don't get back up first try it's a different story.

Interesting. When you get into the technicalities of it, it certainly makes Garde's "not happy" comments a bit more open to interpretation than the assumption that it was directed at the club.

Yep, it's also why I think all the 'considering his future' comments about Garde are pure guesswork. As I said earlier I wouldn't be surprised if the club overruled him on one of the signings (I'd guess debuchy as I suspect Wenger wanted a big loan fee and a commitment to buy him in the summer if we stayed up and the club have looked at Sinclair and thought 'fuck that') but I don't think he was completely screwed over as some have suggested.
I would imagine Debuchy was one factor. We apparently talked to a lot of players and I would further guess we didn't get close to a deal for a variety of reasons. One may be our position in the table. Another may be that we weren't prepared to offer enough financial enticement to tempt decent players here. Again, that could have been something Garde didn't like and perhaps something that the club changed their stance on.
There are players we apparently lost to Newcastle and I would guess they're on a fair wedge there. Perhaps more than we would have been willing to pay?

I still think Garde will look at his position again in the summer. But of course if results don't actually improve it may not be Garde's decision to leave, he may get booted.

And ultimately, most of those players will kick up a stink and want to leave. It might not have hindered them too much the last time as certain players were happy to sit on fat contracts, even a tier down, but they might not be so lucky this time. And furthermore the sort of players who will happily sit on a huge deal at the expense of playing at the level they should be, or even some who will end up in the reserves so as not to trigger bonuses and add-ons (Shaun Wright Phillips at QPR being a good example) are going to be no help.

Any squad getting relegated will ideally need to have a squad the following season who all want to fight for the club and put things right. Are Townsend and Shelvey going to stick around? I don't think so, and even if they do it will be for the wrong reasons.

They're in a position to absorb it much better than we are, we have no pot to piss in.

You wouldn't be surprised with this bunch.

Nothing surprises me with the Villa now.

Robinho on a free. Surely worth a gamble until the end of the season!?

[eastie] My understanding is that Matt Le Tissier is unattached and has issued a come and get me plea [/eastie]

Have you seen him recently, we'd need a fair few us to get him to villa park.

Ignore that, I was thinking of Merson not le tissier.

Ronaldiniho is 35. Whereas Robinho is only 32. Surely he's worth a short term deal.

Bent and Weimann not even making Derby's squad these days

Its rare enough players we cut go onto better things, Cahill and Davis being the exceptions but something to keep in mind when it comes to reviewing the likes of Baker, Bacuna et al in the summer
