Norwich going for Naismith from Everton. This is exactly the type of player we should be going in for when you're in a relegation battle.

An attacker who averages around five goals per season? I think we've got plenty of those.

He's a fighter. I'd have him in our team over any of our strikers at the moment.

I'd have Ayew ahead of him as either a wide-forward (where they are both more comfortable) or as a centre-forward. Because Ayew is both a "fighter" and a decent goalscorer as well.

If we're spending £9m on a new forward, Steven Naismith is miles down the list of where it would be best spent, regardless of whether it might by a tiny upgrade on Sinclair or Gestede.

I'm not calling for Naismith to replace Ayew, I want him to play with him. We're desperate to stay in this league, and if that means paying over the odds in January then so be it. Needs must and all that.

I know we are all desperate for something to happen but seriously, £8.5m for Naismith is bat shit crazy.

For too long we have had wide attackers / strikers that neither create or score enough goals. We don't need another.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a new striker to come in. But if we're spending £9m, I want somebody who brings more to the table than a 29 year old who scores five goals per season.

He would take one look at our league position and think no thanks. That's the reality of being so far adrift in this window.

He's going to Norwich for crying out loud. Offer him a relegation get out clause and get him in. Have we forgotten that we're a big club? I know the chairman has but I didn't think the fans had.

how is a relegation clause going to help us?

come to villa and if it goes tits up you can bugger off for less money than we paid for you?

Well okay then, how about showing a bit of ambition? Speculate to accumulate etc?
It's only our Premier League status we're taking chances with here.

The trouble is, any striker worth that sort of money is likely to think he can do better than a side looking almost certain to go down.

I don't envy them buying naismith but I do envy their willingness to spend money to stay in the league.

I'm starting to suspect we've decided against trying.

There was a stench of that as early as November, in my opinion.

a bonus to stay up?

i think that apart from continental signings we are really going to struggle to attract anyone who is currently playing in the pl

I think we are so far behind the 8 ball that players like Naismith are neither here nor there.

To keep us up, we need some kind of wild card signing, that could go as badly wrong as it could go right.

The real issue for me was losing 2 of our best players from last season and not replacing them adequately, but I guess we have done that to death on here.

surely staying in the pl has to be worth one last massive gamble.
30 to 40 million of lerners money would equate to how much of the everyday fans?
a drop in the ocean I would imagine,i hope he realizes the enormity of all this

There is no justification for not having anyone by now.
We need someone to give us a boost, it's up to the management, transfer committee whoever calls the shots to sort it out.
No one is asking for loads of money to be thrown about, just abit of economical thinking to be used.
As it stands it looks like the white flag has been raised.

I think there might be an element of that, but I suspect a lot of it is that any potential targets have looked at our position and thought, 'fuck that'. It's a really delicate balancing act, I obviously want us to stay up but I don't want us wrecklessly hurling money at a situation that looks pretty bleak. I'd just hope if we're not spending money in the anticipation of going down, that we are fully prepared and willing to do what's needed to come straight back up.

Could be right, but we havent signed anyone from foreign leagues either. There is no excuse. The club have known our desperate need for new players since early November. The new players should have been here the first week in January after doing all the hard work in December to get them signed up.

Instead it appears Lerner and crew thought making changes at the board room level somehow counts as acting to help the crisis, it is not. We need spending and players and we needed it weeks ago.

If we can't get the right players to sign for us we should at least have a Plan B with a long list of targets to bring in on loan. Money should resolve any problems they have about spending 5 months with a team sat at the bottom of the Premier League.

Any player worth his salt will not join Villa until all other avenues are explored and deadline day is looming. Sad but unfortunately true.
