Neville Southall was a great keeper.

He most certainly was.

Agreed. He was a great goalkeeper.

Yep, brilliant keeper.  Similar to some of the other good keepers in his era that he was not brilliant with his feet, but wasn't required to be so with backpasses allowed.

Talking of Bosnich (as he was mentioned earlier), it's his birthday today apparently. He is still on 44, which is remarkable. He was pretty much done by the age of 27/28 and he was only 22 when he was at his very best for us. Bit of a waste of some seriously prodigious talent, really.

fantastic keeper,
we've had some great keepers down the Villa in my time (the last 40 odd years)
but if I had to put someone in nets from all time and my life depended on it,
 it would be Pat Jennings

Tie that in with the comments elsewhere that the Football league leaned on clubs to help Manure during their time of need perhaps we should be viewed in a similar light.

When was that?

First season of the Premier League.

Is it right that there was a conspiracy to stop Arsenal being relegated a century or so ago?

Yes. That is why Reverend Bone was put on the board. Get God on their side. Seems to have worked.

I think they got promoted after finishing fifth in the second division, instead of Tottenham who finished first. Something to do with what the chairman did in The Great War.*

*This is a vague recollection of what an old London Mod Spurs fan told me about thirty years ago in a club.

If I were Villa I would try to get Benteke on loan with a clause that if we stay up we will give them the full £32.5m back

More or less true, friends in the Foreign Office and all that.
It means all of their subsequent achievements are rendered invalid, and we've won the league 9 times.

There's one problem with that, there's not a chance Benteke would go for it.

as it might make him lose face and the chance to move to another big club in future.  But it depends on how much he really want to play for Belgium in Euro 2016

On the subject of Benteke, in the course of my work today I met a Liverpool fan.  He had been forewarned of my alliegencies and launched into a minutes long rant about how bad Benteke is.  I mean the sort of self righteous sanctimonious outpouring only scousers come out with.  Imagine what we have been saying about Gestede and multiply that by a factor of three and that was the level of his bile.

Because the Liverpool fans have this self annointed take on themselves, the view of Benteke is not going to change and he will be gone by summer if not before.

How's Benteke's agent working that angle? Must be shit when he's not manufacturing a move for his client and he doesn't have the upper hand. Still it was a nice project.
