Does anyone think that this gaggle of halfwits actually has 'a plan'? I'm not sure that they do.
Plan for what?

Come on Dave P. Be fair. Don't make things seem worse than they were. By the 80s our better players were getting Montegos choice of either Flag white, Robbo red (one for the senior citizens there) or Knuckledragger blue.

Apparently Ken McNaught sent his club Montego back because his dogs didn't fit in the boot. Or was it a Maestro?

i remember the days of a slow lumbering heap of rubbish trundling around the pitch well

but enough about our subs warming up against west ham, those montegos were shite as well

The signing of Walker and Bent was significant enough under Houllier to change our season. Now we had better players back then and we weren't in as dire a situation. But I still don't believe that this team is as bad as it appears to be. What it needs is some positive energy, some fresh faces to help change the environment. I know there is talk of Remy and Debuchy. Could they possibly be as influential as Walker and Bent in changing our fortunes?

Was that the left-hand drive version

They would be but this isn't Football Manager sadly. I'd shit a lung in shock if we signed Remy or Debuchy. There's just absolutely no chance. If there's any remote chance they're available, even on loan, there will be clubs in better positions sniffing around. There's no way any established and half reasonable player will touch as with a 20 foot barge pole.

We're gone anyway so if we do sign a couple of players we have to be careful. They've got to have some quality, but also a willingless to slog it out in DIV 2 next season. That may essentially mean carrying on with the ethos we have for 4-5 years. Cheap foreigners, lower league players or players slightly over the hill.

Derek Robinson, the Leyland leftie, who emigrated to Aus IIRC.

The point you're hinting at is a good one: next season, Bennett, Baker and Clark will actually look quite good for us!

Could it be that Garde thought well they are guessing we are going to try and sign him so I might as well string them along, when all the time he has another target, who he is keeping well under wraps.
Good. I hope that target is Ronaldo.

You're completely missing out on the ego side of things.  Club looks utterly fucked but is a massive club, go there on a 6 month loan and if nothing changes it's not your fault, go there and save them and you're a hero and can probably pick your club outside the top 4-5.  Look at QPR a few years back, they were just as fucked as we are and they got Remy and Samba and neither of them saw their careers fall apart as a reulst of it even though they didn't save them.

I actually believe we'd have stayed up in 10/11 even without Bent. We still had Downing and Young at the club back then, we'd have strung a good run of form at some point like we did anyway.

The quality of the squad now is nowhere near 5 years ago, we are down.

Allied to the quality of Bent, Young and Downing, we also experienced top flight players like Petrov, Friedel, Reo-Coker, Luke Young, Collins and Dunne.  Not exactly world beaters, but players who spent the majority of their careers in the top flight and had the nous to get us results when we really needed them.

I'd go with that. Like I said with the Euro's on the horizon players who are on the edge of selection will want to show themselves. They may not all commit long term, but some might. But for many players in Europe right now playing in the PL is still a big deal and if they can get a short term move, help themselves by helping us then ultimately it's a win win.

Worth remembering though that it was reported QPR were paying Samba £100k a week and Remy over £70K. In addition to spending £20m on them.

I agree that we would have been ok without B&W. Remember that season we panicked ar we hovered around 13/14th this season it's a completely different scenario.

We were 17th when we signed Bent, out of the bottom 3 only on goals scored, 2 points off bottom place and we'd scored 19 in 22.
