Villa 3, Man Utd 2

One of the many, many classic games from that 1976-77 season.  Am I right in thinking
they went one up (Pearson ?), Dennis Mortimer drove in a right footer from about 25 yards to equalise - we went 2-1 straight from the 2nd half kick off, Gordon Hill equalised after the ball trickled over the line having hit both posts and Andy Gray scored the winner from Ray Graydon's cross (a goal that pops up on tv from time to time and was mentioned on a thread about Ray recently)

All that off the top my head - anyone else there that would care to share some memories ?

I was definitely there but, sadly can't really help.  Was that the game where Andy Gray flicked the V's to the Manure fans after scoring at the Holte End?  Am I thinking of another game where perhaps he scored two?  My memory is really turning to shit.

Cheers for that Dr Butler - I'll watch that when I have time to give it my full attention, so it was obviously on MOTD that weekend - I don't remember watching again on MOTD - but as I was a single 19 year old lad at the time, no doubt, having gone to the game, I wouldn't not be going out on the town on a Saturday night - just re-inforces what I've said for years now - recorders and in particular digital tv recorders are just about the best invention ever - however did we do without them up until about 10 years ago ??

keep an eye out for Terry Weir behind the Yanited goal first half banging his fists in frustration at a Villa near miss....:)

I don't think it was that game. Possibly the season after.

That Villa team was the most exciting of any Villa team to watch in my lifetime, and that includes the League and European Cup team.

Just got around to watching.  Two observations, first:  Sad to see that two of our players from that match have passed on, namely Gordon Smith and John Robson and one from Manure, Brian Greenhoff.  RIP to them all.

Secondly, and I thought about this before Motson mentioned it,* the state of the pitch.  It got me thinking just how much better those good players would have been had they have had the benefit of playing on the surfaces that we have today?

I think this match was discussed on here earlier this year as I'd forgotten all about that penalty and I think I mentioned it.

Thanks for posting Doc.

in my opinion Frank and Alex could of easily played in todays game, and was there a finer crosser of a football than Ray ?

I remember the game as if it was yesterday and I haven't had the time to watch the video yet!

United brought a massive support - they won the  previous year at Villa Park and even back then we were not great against them on the pitch.

I loved John Robson - was never so sure  about Gordon Smith.  The other player who has cropped up in messages  is Frank Carrodus - my grandparents lived across the road from the Barnes  family and the arl fellow whenever we were visiting Manc land always mentioned him.  A great work horse and  a great foil for our other wide players.

We beat them 2-1 at home in 1975/76.
