Played in defence, centre half/full back?Yes Dave Brian Rowan was a Scottish left back, tipped to be the new Charlie Aitken at the time. He played in a hevy defeat 3-0 I think at Watford and nothing was ever seen of him Absolutely scandalous defeat at Watford. One of the very worst Villa performances I have ever seen. Brian Tiler somehow managed to head through his own goal from the edge of the box. It was the day the previous seasons amazing Tommy Doc euphoria was well and truly killed off - he was gone a couple of months later.

The Doc didn't seem to like Charlie Aitken very much (as a player,) as I recall to our total amazement he left him out in a mid-week match against Bolton which we lost 2-1. It was Jimmy Brown's debut. Charlie was sat in the stand a couple of rows behind me. A group of us waited outside after the game and the Doc came out and we questioned him re Charlie not playing. He said he was injured which was utter bollocks because a) Charlie said that he was fully fit, and b) if the Doc knew anything at all about Charlie he would have known that the fucker was the fittest player at the club and rarely, if ever got injured. It was then that I realised that this was all going to end in tears.

It was the day the previous seasons amazing Tommy Doc euphoria was well and truly killed off - he was gone a couple of months later. Yes mate it was the day that Doc lost the plot, played Tiler in midfield I recall and was starting to bring back players he had bombed out such as Hole, Edwards, Chatterley, Rudge and Godfrey in a last resort to turn the tide as we were rooted to the foot of the second division. About this time he signed John Phillips from Shrewsbury and Emment Kapengwe and Freddie Mwila from the NASL, and George Curtis to try and instill some much-needed grit, but constantly chopping and changing the team to no avail led to the final straw which was the 5-3 home defeat by PortsmouthI remember the 3-5 against Portsmouth mainly for the fact there a some older, burly Pompey fans at the front of the Holte and there was a charge down from the back to have a go at the "fucking sailors" when the game began to go pear-shaped. Yes mate the Doc well and truly lost the plot that day too, dropping Charlie Aitken for Barry Lynch, and bringing in Jimmy Brown, I remember it was 2-2 at half time but the second half was a disaster, he replaced Lynch with Lionel Martin as we attacked the Holte End but two fairly late goals by Pompey did us and the crowd had enough.
