The Doc didn't seem to like Charlie Aitken very much (as a player,) as I recall to our total amazement he left him out in a mid-week match against Bolton which we lost 2-1.  It was Jimmy Brown's debut.  Charlie was sat in the stand a couple of rows behind me.  A group of us waited outside after the game and the Doc came out and we questioned him re Charlie not playing.  He said he was injured which was utter bollocks because a) Charlie said that he was fully fit, and b)  if the Doc knew anything at all about Charlie he would have known that the fucker was the fittest player at the club and rarely, if ever got injured.  It was then that I realised that this was all going to end in tears.

15 years old Jimmy Brown. Introduced by The Doc to us as the future captain of Scotland. No pressure son.

I've only looked at that once but, I think there's a lad on there by the name of Brian Rowan.  Played in defence, centre half/full back?
Yes Dave Brian Rowan was a Scottish left back, tipped to be the new Charlie Aitken at the time. He played in a hevy defeat 3-0 I think at Watford and nothing was ever seen of him

Absolutely scandalous defeat at Watford. One of the very worst Villa performances I have ever seen. Brian Tiler somehow managed to head through his own goal from the edge of the box. It was the day the previous seasons amazing Tommy Doc euphoria was well and truly killed off - he was gone a couple of months later.

Sounds like Sherwood's reign

Amazing when you see what Charlie went on to achieve. Football unlike other organisations is all about personalities rather than ability at times. It's why players like Gabby don't get dropped and other players don't get a look in.

Very interesting read that about the Doc ALITA.
Signing young untried players, praising players to the hilt (the new George Best, the new Scottish captain, the new Bobby Moore, etc.) and knowing in reality we're in for a struggle when publicly saying we're on the up.
Remind you of anyone?

Found this. Extracts from Tommy Doc. Chapter 10 Villain of the Piece.

Mike Ferguson had a stormer for Blackburn against Villa the season before he signed, he literally ran rings round us!
The new George Best indeed.
He never discovered that form with Villa although he went on to do well for QPR later.

It was the day the previous seasons amazing Tommy Doc euphoria was well and truly killed off - he was gone a couple of months later.

Yes mate it was the day that Doc lost the plot, played Tiler in midfield I recall and was starting to bring back players he had bombed out such as  Hole, Edwards, Chatterley, Rudge and Godfrey in a last resort to turn the tide as we were rooted to the foot of the second division. About this time he signed John Phillips from Shrewsbury and Emment Kapengwe and Freddie Mwila from the NASL, and George Curtis to try and instill some much-needed grit, but constantly chopping and changing the team to no avail led to the final straw which was the 5-3 home defeat by Portsmouth

I remember the 3-5 against Portsmouth mainly for the fact there a some older, burly Pompey fans at the front of the Holte and there was a charge down from the back to have a go at the "fucking sailors"  when the game began to go pear-shaped.

Yes mate the Doc well and truly lost the plot that day too, dropping Charlie Aitken for Barry Lynch, and bringing in Jimmy Brown, I remember it was 2-2 at half time but the second half was a disaster, he replaced Lynch with Lionel Martin as we attacked the Holte End but two fairly late goals by Pompey did us and the crowd had enough.

Which reminds me of a 62 bus journey around this time. I asked my mate rather loudly how Villa reserves had got on that day. A lad sitting in front of me turned around and said "they won".
"How do you know" I said. "I was playing" he replied.

It was Barry Lynch. Different days.

Saw Barry Lynch last year, he attended with some other players from different eras at a book launch, he looked well.

Has anyone checked out :- Alamy photos 1967-68-69 OR the great Oscar Arce, Alamy photos.
I never knew what he looked like until I found these 3 weeks ago.
And didn't their shirts look worn and tatty?
Cost cutting at it's worst!

Correction ! Alamy photos Aston Villa 1967-8-9.
I well remember at junior school in 1968, I think, when one of the other boys brought in the Villa team photo which was subsequently
pulped - due to the fact that one of the players, front row middle, who had forgotten to wear his underpants and had his ''budgie'' on
display! Who was the culprit?!

Fantasy football. I offer the following team 69/70 to dish out a 4-1 beating of the current 2015 side:-
                                                                                Evan Williams

                Wright                      Tiler                                                                    Turnbull                             Aitken

                           Godfrey                                             Rioch                                                   Chico

                                                  Simmonds                                          Lochhead                                             Anderson

ANY THOUGHTS ?
