The captain Archie Hunter would have played but he was on leave following the news of the death of his older brother Andy who also played for us and scored our first ever goal in the FA Cup.

Absolutely lovely historical thing, but why do I get the impression that the reporter was a Wolves fan?

Even back then.

The Midlands media have it in for us. It's historical.

And was later resurrected to be with Archie on his deathbed ( (c) Peter Morris).

I don't think any of the Hunter brothers had long lives.

Wasn't the own goal scored by us the first ever league goal?

Up to a few years ago it was regarded as the first football league goal, but not now see link -

As for the Hunter brothers, by late 1890 when he did the Triumphs of the Football Field interviews he was the last brother left (including a third brother that played for Derby). Archie died late 1894 aged 35, Andy lived to 32 (some internet sources state 24/5 but they’re wrong). Would really recommend the Triumphs of the Football Field book for anyone interested in the early history of the club.
