I'm not too fussed about numbers but Bennett and Steer aren't good enough even as cover in my opinion. Gabby needs at least a half decent season to show he isn't finished at the top level as far as I am concerned. You can file Chris Herd under Lord Lucan and Shergar. I am waiting for a  documentary on one of the more obscure digital channels to find out whatever happened to him.

I rate Bennett above cissoko and luna so I think he's decent cover.

I can't help thinking that arguing over the best Villa left back is like arguing over the best Jive Bunny song.

I love the narrative about great past players who have worn certain numbers, the best being possibly the call-out of Gavin McCann in the No 8 shirt.

There's some stiff competition for the least effective No 8 since squad numbers were introduced.

What a team this would have been:

1. Peter Enckelmann
2. Steve Watson
3. Jlloyd Samuel
4. Steve Sidwell
5. Alpay
6. Carl Tiler
7. Steven Ireland
8. Jermaine Jenas
9. Marlon Harewood
10. Charle N'Zogbia
11. Alan Thompson

Some from memory but some from here: http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Aston_Villa_Squad_Numbers.html

Extremely harsh to include Watson & Thompson in that team, in my opinion.

If you look at the list of names against squad numbers on the website Joe refers to, Watson is the outstanding candidate for the no.2 shirt and the only challenger to Thompson in the no 11 shirt is Collymore.
